“So Average.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2014

Monaco reminds to many of us Princess grace, class, the best of the best.
My husband and I expected all these when we booked a short stay at this flagship hotel of the tiny principality.
Instead we found "An Attitude". Most of the people around us spoke Russian Ukraine or anything but French.
The food at the grill upstairs was so costly and average. It took ages, until they delivered it, and made such a fuzz about it, that we could not enjoy our dinner.
The hotel is going through some upgrading which is needed! But that was not told to us, before arrival.
The spa - a tunnel connecting between this hotel and another - is nice. But you can book services there, and stay at a more friendly and youthful hotel 5 minutes away, outside Monaco.

So it was not a night mere, but an average hotel, over pricy and irrelevant.
We miss you, Grace.

Room Tip: Since many rooms are being renovated - not much choice.

On my visit I stayed at both Hotel Hermitage and Hotel de Paris. Hotel de Paris was my favourite. The hotel lobby was very grand and the staff were very nice and helpful. We were upgraded to a sea view room and it was beautiful. We had a good sized balcony and we were able to sit outside in the evening and enjoy the view of the port. The hotel also has two fantastic restaurants that we dined at, Louis XV and the Le Grill. This trip was for a special occasion as my boyfriend proposed and at no time were we made to feel uncomfortable in these wonderful settings. The hotel is right next to the Casino and is busy with people taking pictures of all the fantastic cars parked outside. I liked being in the thick of the atmosphere which is why I preferred Hotel de Paris.

Room Tip: The sea view room was beautiful. We were fortunate to be upgraded but I think it is worth the extra...

OK, I get it, it's in Montecarlo, it's overlooking the Casino, it's a lovely building, etc etc, but is it ever acceptable for staff to be condescending and rude ? If they don't want non-hotel residents in their precious premises they should put a sign outside and say so. As it is, they choose instead to be unprofessional and haughty (although what they have to be haughty about is truly beyond me)
My advice - unless you're a footballer or a russian oligarch - stay away and save your money. On our visit, the bar was 3/4 empty anyway and you can see why.

Absolutely stunning views and beautiful hotel but service and food not great. We ordered the fois grais which was great , my main course was the duck and whilst the meat was beautifully cooked was to sweet for me wasn't really explained to me properly when I asked how it was cooked. Also ordered a bottle of gigondas @€110 had to keep asking the wine waitress to keep comin and topping up. Asked a couple of waiters what the sauce was with chicken and they didn't know had to go and ask, you would have thought that a fine establishment like this the staff would be briefed on the menu. Some if the staff did not understand English, as far as I'm concerned they should not be working there. This is such a wonderful hotel but the service lets it down. Whilst some staff are fantastic such as young hari the others let it down. When I'm back in the area I will try again but hope it's a notch better.

We visited the American Bar to celebrate and discovered that the Hotel is going for a complete makeover over the coming 4 years. In early October the Bar will close and only 30 rooms at the front of the Hotel will be available from early 2015. Then it will slowly be renovated bit by bit. if you are thinking of staying it would be wise to check as this data came from the bar staff.
The American Bar was as relaxing as ever- apparently it will not be changed, but just "revitalised".

We eat in "salle empire" and it's the worst diner that we eat, It's very expensive for an overcook fish and lamb, the starter it was very simple without pleasure. The dessert is good.
The service it's the worst service that ever seen in the world. Change that quickly...

Stayed here August 2013 as a guest of the casino next door. Guests of casino get a special wing of the hotel so not sure how our room compares to the rest of the hotel, but it was very nice and luxurious. Definitely traditional French style. The restaurant on the top floor of the hotel was also amazing, get a table near the windows overlooking Port Hercules. Would love to stay here again!
