“Mmmmmm, not so sure....”
Reviewed 28 January 2013

I usually stay at Le Méridien Beach Plaza on my quarterly business trips to MC, but this time was encouraged by some travelling companions who were attending the same meeting to stay at the Columbus. I just didn't like it. My room overlooked the rear which is very close to the heliport and which made for very noisy accommodation. I was told it was a cool, funky hotel but i just didn't get it - and the staff were fairly surly to boot... It is in a very boring part of town, a cab ride from all the action (hence a free shuttle service), and i just felt trapped. My room was tired, has markings on the walls where furniture had rubbed against it and the bed was very uncomfortable. I was really looking forward to staying somewhere different for a change and I wish I had just stayed at Le Meridien.

Dear Guest, we are sorry you did not like the Columbus and did not enjoy your stay with us. Some of the points you are listing can be seen by other guests as some positive points, being near from the heliport is an asset for business men and usually very few guests complain about the noise, the area is quiet with a park just opposite the hotel, within walking distance from several restaurants and bars (on the Fontvieille marina), in a residential quarter and this is very often considered as an authentic area, away from the touristic crowd. We fully understand this is not your taste and choice. Best regards. Claudine

This review is long overdue. I stayed here the first weekend of January. The location is perfect -- a quiet neighborhood, right on the water -- my room on the 7th floor was quiet, clean and had a lovely view of the Med. Although the hotel is literally next to the heliport, I was not disturbed by any flights. A 5 min walk away is a huge grocery store with everything/anything you want or need. No taxi/cab will take you anywhere for less than 10 Euros, but Monaco is very walkable and safe. There is a underground walkway in the mall attached to the grcoery store --- take that to the elevator and go up one floor and you will be along the port. Although a hill, the walk up to the Casino is easy enough.

The staff at the hotel leaves much to be desired --- except for one (will get to her later....). The front desk was fairly dismissive, and made a guest feel unwelcome, unappreciated, and bothersome. When asked where the exercise room was, the front desk said "it's on the 2nd floor". Would have been nice to say ....when you get off the elevator walk straight and it's the last door to your left in the main elevator area. Instead I walked around the 2nd floor looking for a sign or glass door to the room. Sorry to bother you by asking a simple question!

So the best member of the staff is Amanda, the concierge. What a gem! She is extremely friendly, knowledgable, and understand what guests are looking for. I HIGHLY recommend the hotel invest the time and money to ensure she is consistently trained and groomed to grow in the business. She is a rising star. I have stayed at 5 star, Leading Hotels of the World, etc properties......she can easily work there and is better than most of those places' staff!

All in all --- this is a great place to stay for a short visit -- clean room, clean bathroom (lighten was a bit dark, need more lighting there -- especially above sink --- and no idea why you have that bamboo looking ladder --- takes up too much space!). Highly recommend for a visit to Monaco.

(Did not eat at the hotel --- breakfast was overpriced and too many local places to enjoy for dinner, ask Amanda where to go!)

Dear Guest, many thanks for taking the time to forward such a detailed and informative message and we have of course forwarded your comments onto the Reception and the Conciergerie, both for your unsatisfaction and your kind appreciation of Amanda. It's a shame you did not try our restaurant, as although we are located among several restaurants, it's worth trying it, it's more than just a hotel's restaurant, it has its own identity and ambiance. with kind regards. A greatly located hotel with walking distance to main port. The balcony had great view with Monte facing and great view of the scenic montecarlo harbour.
The restaurant for breakfast was very simple menu but sufficient.
Rooms were of good quality with all the accessories of standardised quality provided.
Staff were very friendly and courteous.
It has a sitting area , kind of lounge were you sit late at nite.

Room Tip: Select it if you want to be in heart of city.

This hotel has a great location overlooking the sea. Service is friendly, and there are nce seatign areas in the lobby. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed, although small. The mattresses are not as firm as in most hotels, which could be an issue for those with back problems. The breakfast buffet is ample, but not very creative. Overall, a very nice hotel at a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the sea.

Dear Guest, We thank you for taking the time to forward your comments about your stay at Columbus. We have different categories of rooms and you probably got a Classic room, as our Deluxe double rooms are quite spacey. Regarding the quality of the mattresses, this depends on each person's preference. We got a lot of requests for getting the brand/type of mattresses used in the hotel and usually they are quite appreciated. We would be delighted to see you back at Columbus. Kind regards. Claudine

[ello,
Excellent reviews from Trip Advisors members provide my boyfriend and me our lovely unforgetable new year celebration trip from Sweden across Europe to Monaco. Here I am to write reviews and hope for them to for more or less help others as we have recieved.

Monaco : I was worried that I might have made a wrong itinery to stay 3 days in the small country such Monaco since if you search for french rivera trip planing suggestions all of them place Monaco as a side track which can be done in one day or even few hours! My experince was a stuning surprise! We did not want to leave the city and since our further hotel and destination was Nice so we decided to stay in Monaco as long as we could and do late check-in in Nice instead.

Monaco was amazingly gorgeous! Everywhere was very neat and clean. We were there in period of Chirstmas and New Year so there were pretty light decorations all over the city. Flowers and trees were well taken care of everywhere we passed. We loved walking in Monaco. It was easy and we felt so safe. Monaco friendly police in their white caps and neat uniforms were walking around to do their job. We combinded our walk with traveling on bus to see the whole city [ 5€/24 hr was a smart choice ] Food is not that expensive. We found good food in nice restauruant were not more expensive than nice restuarant in Sweden. People there were as elegant as the city. Very many were well dressed-up and kind. We attended New Year fireworks celebration in Monaco. Unforgetable.
If Monaco would be a lady. She would be a noble lady with elegant style, very beautiful and very romantic. Please take time to get to know Monaco. You will love her and just do not want to leave this beauty!
[ Do not miss the exotic garden and the full round of bus number 5! You will know why :) ]

The hotel : We got everything vi had paid for. Free parking over night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. was 3 minutes walking from the hotel. It was not full even during the New Year celebration period. Breakfast could be better but do not really have to. Depends on one's expectation. I was happy with croissants and that when I ordered coffee I got the whole big jar of milk of my own!
Bed was nice. The rum was very neat. Maids were willing to wait to make up our room when we were in our room late in the afternoon. We had an ocean view room. Lovely balcony and refreshing view :)
Very certain and comfortable to choose Hotel Columbus again for our next visit in Monaco.

We only stayed for one night but found the hotel to be thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable. A very good nights sleep on a very comfortable mattress in a modern, stylish and well designed room. we had a lovely balcony with a little table and chairs which was very nice. My small dog was very welcome and he really like it too. My only complaint was the bathroom - the mirror is too small and badly lit -not easy for make up and hair styling! Also more mirrors would be nice. The bathrooms could do with a makeover and the carpet was worn outside the lift. But, apart from this the decor was very good indeed. A kettle for tea would be nice but that is probably a uniquely English request.
A very efficient and friendly valet service whisked the car away and we were swiflty checked-in, a very smooth and friendly reception. This is something of a culture shock after the usual french reception in hotels but everywhere in Monaco you will find staff to be polite and helpful.
Stay here if you would like a good value for money, stylish hotel in a quiet and residential area. Monte Carlo is only 10 minute walk away, you can take a short cut up the esalators located near the lovely Port of Fontveille. There is a small beach and amazing coastal path going towards Cap D'ail with spectacular views. We will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony

The hotel is in Fontvieille - very close to the centre of Monte Carlo. We were in suit with living area, very nice decorated and the bed was huge and very confortable. Free WiFi. Our suit was overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the Princess Grace Rose Garden. Breakfast was very nice in continental style served on the terrace. Staff were friendly and provided excellent service and gave us helpfull advice about the city. We went to the Palace and saw the changing the guard and went to the Oceanographic museum. We would recommend this hotel.
