Had been in TRNC (Turkish part) for 8 days, and then dropped down to Greek part for a few days in Larnaca .. specifically for me to go scuba diving on the Zenobia wreck.
Booked direct using eMail .. which was easy to do.
Arrived at Hotel … room waiting, initially I thought .. God this is small, then they opened another door with a full lounge & kitchen ……. Pleased with overall room size, and with kitchen facilities – although we only used the kettle & Fridge.
Hotel itself is an unasuming 3 Star, and based on that and it’s price it is good value for money … £18 pp per night. Be warned though that extras could rack up if you were to request them …
Air-Conditioning … £3 per day
TV … per day rental
Safe deposit box … cost per day etc.
We only had the air-con option ………. It was a great big beast of a thing on the wall, and sounded like an intercity 125 train when switched on …. And it was ON or Off, no other control …. Very Primitive.
Rooms were kept reasonably clean, many fittings in bathroom were faulty, tap tops missing, no plugs etc.
Maintenace is obviously an issue - I reported that no light in lounge - bulb had blown, 24 Hrs later still not done (even though told several times - be done in one hour !) ... they then said have to wait another day, when I asked could I therefore have a bulb and fit it myself ... as it was simple .... they came up and did it ...
A bit like on arrival - they simply point at map and tell you to walk around pool area to get there, no offer to take bags to room, or even show you where the room is.
...rushing to help is not something they could be accused of.
The Hotel has a reasonably sized pool, and a smaller shallow pool, plenty of pool deck area an sunbeds …. But be warned the umbrellas are useless … they are cast into the floor, and then look as if they could be good as they are rectangular, but they proved useless … as you can’t move them – you can’t get into a position to get any shade ….. so at 39 degrees C you will burn !
The pools like much of the hotel is suffering form age, it’s a liner pool, and there are several ripple sin the floor where the liner has moved, and the steps out in the deep end were falling apart … literally, the bottom rung fell off totally while we were there.
There is a pool bar which does snacks …. Very much British market focussed … chips & tomato sauce with everything, but to be fair the food was OK, and reasonably priced.
They put on a BBQ once a week – but we gave that a miss as the Karaoke night is not something I want when abroad.
Within easy walking distance as a small number of eateries … again ‘The Sussex Pub’ offering English Cooking gives you an idea of the typical clientele. Walk further towards Larnaca and you come across a couple of reasonable Tavernas, and when you get to the 3 big Hotels – Lordos, Sandy Beach etc., opposite is a good Italian Style restaurant (Dianas sp?) … food was really good, but service was terrible, 20 mins to get then to take drink order …..
The place was very much aimed at the German tourist with menus in German, so perhaps atrocious German waiter service is to be expected … but food was good.
Many of bars & restaurants in this part of Larnaca are German orientated.
There is a bus service into Larnaca from outside the Hotel (No.18)… but it is not very frequent after 6pm .. every 2 Hrs or so, but it does get you to the Promenade easy enough … and at fixed price of £0.70 it’s good value.
Plenty of eateries & drinking places on the promenade, but it is also popular with Greek guys driving cars with as much noise as possible .. either from huge customised engines, or from full volume sound systems … 1970’s style car cruising is alive and well in Larnaca.
There are only really 2 streets with shops in, roughly parallel to sea front … most shut around 7.30
If you do miss the bus … a taxi is not that expensive, around £6 (BTW – all prices are in Cypriot pounds … equal to about £1.20 gbp when we were there)
As mentioned my reason for being there was to dive … and I dived with a set up in Larnaca called ‘Dive In’ … if you have any questions about the diving feel free to drop me a mail.
There appears to be plenty of beaches … either shingle or coarse sand near the hotel … or better quality down near promenade, no shortages of sunbeds for hire … or so it seemed … we did not use the beach.
In conclusion … cheap n cheerful hotel, now fading and showing it’s age …. Location means travel needed to get anywhere – taxi or hire car probably essential for more than the few days we spent there. But based on it's price, it did represent good value for money.
