It is always a delight to find an Austrian restaurant that has broken away from the traditional offerings, and the restaurant at Schloss Duernstein certainly has. The menu works creatively with traditional ingredients to produce excellent meals.
We dined at the restaurant both for a light lunch and later for dinner. For lunch we sat on the terrace and enjoyed the views of the Donau. The drawback, of course, was that smoking was allowed in the area and also that people from the non-smoking inside restaurant came to the terrace to indulge their addiction. [Why restaurants that value their food allow smoking is still a mystery to me.] The food was very good, and the service also, complementing the view nicely.
In the evening we chose to sit inside. The food was still very good, and the surroundings pleasant enough, but our waiter was not very interested in us. From the start he did not assign us the best available table, despite our reservation, and he was not the least attentive during the rest of the evening. This spoilt our otherwise agreeable experience.
My recommendation: visit the restaurant and hope for (or demand) better service than we received in the evening.
