“Charming and romantic setting along the Danube”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

Relax in a charming hotel in the historic town of Durstein with views overlooking the Danube. As stated by others, the rooms are not luxurious but very comfortable. The corridors are lined with antique art, cabinets and chairs. The garden is lovely and the adjacent decent-sized pool is surrounded by the historic building and abbey walls. Bicycling along the level bike paths between Durnstein and Spitz (10 km) or to Melk (30 km) takes you along vineyards and fruit orchards between small villages. One caveat, if you travel to Melk and arrive after 4:20 P.M., the only transportation with your bike is a single 7:30 P.M. bus from the train station back to Durnstein.
If you travel from Durnstein to Spitz or Melk on the steamer then you can bicycle back. Bicycles are available at the hotel. The breakfast were excellent in a charming setting.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the Danube is worth the slight additional expense.

Do NOT stay here if you are looking for luxury. Stay here if, like us, you love unique, historic, properties with a fabulous view from your room, warm and helpful owners, and a location you cannot beat! We fell in love with this place; having breakfast (included) in the dining room every morning, takiing a dip in their beautiful pool surrounded by the gorgeous garden and original abbey walls, walkiing through the courtyard into incredible Durnstein, and checking out the hotel's collection of art and furniture. While it is not luxurious (ie. no A/C and our room could have used a fan), the rooms are lovely. those were some lucky nuns!!! Like other reviewers, we also loved dining in the restaurant with a fantastic view of the Danube. In addition, we had a car and loved the fact we could park in their parking lot; Durnstein does not allow car traffic.

Durnstein, and the entire area, is magnificent. We highly recommend taking the ferry to Melk in the morning and riding bikes back to Durnstein (about 20 miles tops, mostly level or slightly downhill), stopping at various Heurigan for wine tasting on the way back! Our most fun day in Austria!

Room Tip: We requested a room with a view and boy... did we have a view!

Very nice hotel – smallish rooms, but beautiful grounds and nicely appointed rooms/comfy beds. Staff is pretty helpful….and of course it’s in a great location in the center of Durstein….just a few feet from the main street with cute shops filled with merillat (apricot) products. Our group ate in the restaurant one night and the food was excellent….I had a steak tartare that was out of this world! Breakfast was extensive and with lots of choices, and their cappuccino was EXCELLENT. Staff were slightly less than enthusiastic, but certainly on par with most of that part of Europe  . My only complaint is they claim to have wi-fi in the rooms, but no one in our group could ever get wifi in the rooms – only in the lobby right next to the reception desk….however, this seemed to be a common occurrence in all the nice hotels we stayed in in the Czech and Austrian countryside….

We stayed two nights in an excellent room at the corner of the building, overlooking both the park as well as the danube valley - to be recommended. The room was tastefully furnished, as all the hotel, parts of it even with antiquities. The stylish restaurant offers excellent food and the local wine specialities, service of staff is of best quality. At breakfst time the restaurant may be even a bit crowded...
An excellent stay has its (high) price, thus the price-service relation can be called a little bit "expensive" - but the experience is worth it.

The service and food are outstanding. Their outside dinning is over looking the Danube. They service a great Austrian breakfast buffet which is included in your price of your room. The staff goes out of its way to help you. If you like hiking or bike riding this is the place to go. Restaurants serve great wine. The hotel is spotless.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great. The rooms facing the front of the hotel show the Danube River. The East si...

the Hotel gives atmosphere of luxury. Old furniture and decorated the room as well as the hallways, lobby and all public areas of the hotel, very impressed us and gave us a sense of respectability. When we arrived, we had dinner at the hotel restaurant overlooking the Danube. The service was amazing. The food was excellent. . The atmosphere and service are worth every euro. Breakfast is in an intimate dining room. . Free Parking at the hotel yard. Hotel garden and the view are lovely . Room and bathroom were very clean . in Our room was waiting for us a bottle of drinking water, Complimentary of the Hotel. One should take a few days and enjoy the hotel and the beautiful village.

We spent several nights here during a bike trip through Austria. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Restaurant food was very good and plentiful. The location within this small town is ideal, right in the midst of shops and restaurants. Quiet, clean, comfortable and with beautiful views of surrounding vineyards, mountains and river, one really couldn't ask for more.
