“Changing exhibitions”

So it depends when you go. Focus is on Austrian modern art, presented in a beautiful museum. Nice cafe on top.

“Wet Tuesday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2012

Regulars to the Essl on each visit to Vienna, it has a free bus from behind the StaatsOper every two hours or by D tram or A4 U-bahn to Heiligenstadt and a bus to Klosterneuberg, LeopoldBr.

Currently exhibitions Alex Katz, Xenia Hauser and New York, New York. As usual, very quiet so we could walk around and enjoy the art.

Ten minutes walk from Stift Klosterneuberg, a high gothic abbey with roman/medieval crypt.

“Great Museum if you like modern art in a very artistic setting.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2012

We got there around 7 p.m. (it is free on Wednesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m.) and it’s a massive building, but the only art is on the 2nd floor. It was awesome. Each room had anywhere from one to five pieces of art by Anselm Kiefer, the current exhibition. Most of his works are massive canvasses that take up the whole wall. This particular art show was curated by Mr. Essl himself because he wanted to ensure that each work of art had the right effect. I have to say that Mr. Essl is awesome because I found that every single room was a new and wonderful experience. The visual effect of entering each room was stunning and I really admire this man who loves art and has the money to display it in such a wonderful place. It was fantastic. A definite highlight for us.

“at the cutting edge of modern art”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 February 2012

the founder, who is an austrian industrialist having made a fortune with a chain of "baumarkt" (building supply stores) presents a fresh and sometimes daring persepctive on highlights of modern art otherwise not seen. i personally do not like modern art per se, but what this museum does is wothwhile to check out when in the area
