“Delightful Stay”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

We stayed here in late May 2013 and loved it. Maria is absolutely wonderful and very generous. She took great care of us and made us feel at home. We were still a big jet lagged from our flight over from the US, but Maria helped us make the adjustment and get some great rest. I highly recommend Haus Trausner!

Although convenience in location is just one of the positive aspects of Haus Trausner, I thought I'd mention that to add to everyone else's rave reviews!
If you're travelling to Hallstatt by car, consider the fact that you can't drive into the town. You park your car on the outskirts and then catch a shuttle bus, or walk. If you stay at Haus Trausner however, parking is available at the house.
Travelling by bus? This is the closest accommodation to the bus-stop... 5 minutes walk.
Travelling by train/ferry (as I did)? Then it's a 10 minute walk or shuttle bus to the house.
If you plan to self cater at all, the town's super market is opposite the bus-stop. Maria provides tea and coffee making facilities as well as a small fridge.
I'd now like to endorse every positive point everyone else has made! Maria is a genuinely warm and welcoming host who will help you make the most out of your stay. I stayed for a week and could easily have found activities to fill more time.
Hallstatt is a uniquely beautiful town with a fascinating history dating pack to prehistoric times, while the preservation of the local culture and dress is a fascinating aspect of modern Hallstatt.
Now, perhaps you're wondering, like I was, for €35/night for a double room (single use, with ensuite shower and basin but shared toilet, table and chairs), including breakfast (compared with €80 for a similarly sized room in other accommodation houses), how good could it be? Can I tell you it was perfect! Perfectly clean and fresh, beautiful outlooks from all the rooms and a welcoming place to come home to at the end of a day's adventuring!!

Room Tip: This house is not suitable for people who are unable to negotiate 2 flights of stairs since all the...

We recently spent nearly two weeks in Austria and the last place we stayed was Hallstatt. We hadn't booked anything in this charming Alpine town beforehand, but figured we could find a "zimmer frei". After being turned away from two other establishments that were full, we came across Haus Trausner and immediately met Maria Trausner, who was welcoming two other guests to her home. She had one room left and was happy to welcome us as well.

The home is not directly on the lake, but we weren't fussy about having a lake view. We stayed in Room 2 and enjoyed a lovely view of the Salzberg mountains. The weather was a bit stormy, but the clouds added a magical touch to the soaring mountains. When we were in the room, we would open the windows and enjoy the view.

Haus Trausner is less than a five minute walk to the lake and less than 10 minutes to the center of town. It's also less than five minutes to the station for the "cog train" that takes you to the Salzbergwerk (the salt mines). You can also get a boat tour and the boat dock is also very close.

Haus Trausner has three rooms at the top of the house that Maria lets out to travelers for as little as a day or for as long as you want (for the latter situation, advance reservations are necessary). We stayed two nights and it wasn't long enough.

Room 1 has its own bathroom (toilet and shower included), while Rooms 2 and 3 share a toilet, but have their own showers. Room 2 is the larger of the two and has a beautiful view of the surrounding area (as mentioned above). If you don't mind sharing a toilet, ask for Room 2. If you do mind, ask for Room 1.

The room we stayed in was clean, nicely decorated, very comfortable, and well lit (including bedside lamps!). The price is 25 euros per person per night and includes breakfast, which is a great price! Breakfast consists of Kaisersemmel (rolls), rye bread, sliced meats and cheeses, jam, and coffee. (Tea is available, but you have to ask for it.) On Sundays, Maria will also cook up an egg to your liking.

The only downside (although, some may see it as an upside) to Haus Trausner is: no internet. If you want a wifi connection, you'll have to walk into town to the Heritage Hotel. But even this inconvenience isn't so bad. Buy a drink and some apfelstrudel and the staff of the hotel are happy to let you sit and surf the web as long as you like.

Finally, Maria is one of the friendliest, most helpful B&B owners we've ever met! She was cheerful and enthusiastic and made some great recommendations for things we should see and do in and around Hallstatt. She noted that my partner and I are both photographers and told us we absolutely must visit the waterfalls near Wiesberg. She was happy to speak German with us and equally happy to speak English. (And her English is excellent, by the way!)

If you're going to Hallstatt for a day or for a week, stay at Haus Trausner. It's worth every euro! We are definitely planning a return trip.

This is a delightful place to stay, and very reasonable, too. The location is close to everything. The facilities are up to date, and the rooms are very clean. Breakfast is simple -- bread, jam, cheese, and coldcuts - but enough to get you going and served on the patio or balcony with beautiful views. The owner, Maria, is a sweetheart who really does her best to make guests comfortable. She hikes, and can provide advice about trails.

Big warning -- do NOT use Google Maps to find this guesthouse. It will send you on a wild goose chase. If you need directions, get them when you book.

If you will be near Hallstatt, Austria, do yourself a favor and stop in for a night at Haus Trausner! It's the most charming B&B we stayed at in all of Europe. Steps away from the bus station, "downtown" Hallstatt, and the beautiful lake Hallstattersee, Haus Trausner is situated in the foothills of the Austrian Alps. Maria is a wonderful hostess, making sure you are comfortable and fed. When we arrived, we were greeted by her lovely daughter who led us to our plush room. The beds are feathery and the rooms are quiet---a nice break for us backpackers! Plus we had a nice shower, sink, dining table and huge armoire in our room. One morning, when the weather was nice, she prepared us a lovely breakfast in her garden. Maria recommended a trip up to the Ice Caves, which is a really neat, must-do experience. We also hiked to the nearby salt mine, which is what Hallstatt is known for. Browsing downtown Hallstatt is a favorite European memory of mine--so many cute boutiques and restaurants! A word to the wise: be sure to eat early because restaurants and even the grocery store close early. I would recommend this B&B for all walks of life --- couples looking for a getaway, backpackers wanting to escape the hostel scene, and families traveling through the Salzkammergut region.

Recently spent a weekend with my husband in Hallstatt and found this B&B wonderful. Room was a good value and very clean. Our hostess, Maria, was wonderfully kind and full of helpful tips whenever we asked. Even gave us a GREAT suggestion for a dinner spot and it was the best food I ate while we were there. Breakfast was delivered to our room every morning. Just a minutes walk to the waters edge. Excellent place!

Haus Trausner is a beautiful house just outside of the downtown area in Hallstatt. I was traveling with my 16 year old son and my mother. Our rooms were up 2 flights of stairs and there were showers in each room with a sink, but the WC was just outside in the hall (to share with all 3 rooms)

Our first room had a queen sized bed and an alcove with a twin bed which was perfect to give my son some privacy. We had a view of the mountains and funicular that takes you to the salt mine.

My mother's room had a queen sized bed and a view of several homes, with a slight view of the lake.

All beds were very comfortable, the showers in great shape, a small refrigerator in the hallway was convenient to store drinks - a grocery store was only a 3 minute walk away.

Breakfast was served each morning in our rooms, but if the weather is nice, you could eat outside on the patio. We had fresh rolls, jelly, meat, cheese, coffee, tea and juice - delicious!

The house itself is a over 100 years old, has a few creaky spots on the floor but is perfecty clean and charming.

Our only concern was actually finding the house - we walked a little too far because the houses are not numbered in order. When you see the signes for the Police station, you are at Haus Trausner.

We hope that we'll be able to return one day and will definitely stay at Haus Trausner!
