If you want to know more about this lovely unesco heritage town, the museum is a good place to start. It gives you a good understanding of Hoe this town comes about, the salt mining including the fire that destroyed quite a bit of the town many years ago. I like Hallstatt lots but it has become rather touristy n commercialized? But on the other hand they do depend a lot on tourism for their revenue too..

This nice but small museum does a fine job of telling the story of salt and mining from prehistoric to roman to medieval to modern times. Explains the importance of Hallstatt culture for cultural anthropology. Good displays.

The museum is rather small but quite interesting. It was very quiet and there were no other visitors at the same time we were there (a lucky coincidence i suppose). The most important part of the exposition, which involves the region and it's history, is of course the Hallstatt Culture and the salt mining. Highly recommend!

A small well laid out museum which chronicles the history of the town. Good exhibits and accompanying explanations. Visiting this would be time well spent while touring Hallstatt

Who knew that this is the site of the world's oldest salt mine? This little museum was quite nice and well worth a visit to understand the ancient history of the area, as well as important anthropologic finds in the ancient salt mines.
