I'll begin by warning anyone unable to climb numerous steps with their luggage to stay elsewhere. That said, we had heavy bags for our two week Austria trip and arrived in the rain. We had no idea how difficult those steps would be, both outside and then inside of the house. Luckily we were able to temporarily leave our car in the narrow main (and only) street below the haus and make three trips up and down all of those steps with our bags. DO NOT LET THAT SCARE YOU AWAY. Once in your room, you are in a comfy little slice of heaven. This is a VERY special place to stay and I would not stay anywhere else in beautiful Halstatt.
We have been lucky enough to have stayed at some of the most beautiful hotels in the world. Haus Gummerer is NOT a luxurious experience, In fact, we shared a toilet (though we had our own private bathroom) with the other room on our floor. Still, we will remember Haus Gummerer as one of our absolute favorites.
As the others have commented, AnneMarie is fantastic. She is just one of those people who you like immediately. She was helpful with advise and fun to talk to about the town's (and the house's) history. Her husband (I am embarassed I forgot his name) is equally likeable, though he speaks almost zero english. The day we left, he and his friend poured my boyfriend and me some homemade pine nut liquor and drank with us. It turned out to be a highlight of the trip. We laughed hard and had a conversation although we didn't speak each other's languages.
Another highlight of our stay was breakfast each day. Was the food cooked to order? No. Did we care? Not when sitting in that small stunning breakfast room with only a single table, surrounded by windows overlooking the lake, drinking fine coffee and eating the simple breakfast. We could have sat there forever. I'll post a few photos of the view. We had almost the same view from our room's private balcony! It rained the entire time we were there so we didn't get to use it. We also determined that Halstaat is equally gorgeous in the rain. We took the ferry trips, enjoyed walking around town, and enjoyed the salt mine tour, all in the rain but it was all still great.
I hope someday we are able to return to Halsatt and Haus Gummerer. Until then, we'll just dream of the lake and the lovely little guesthouse where we were fortunate enough to spend two glorious, cozy nights.
