Owner description: Take the panorama funicular railway up the mountain at Hallstatt to discover the mysterious attraction of this mystical area. The path leads to the tunnel mouth and into a unique underground world first dug by hand more than 3000 years ago: many kilometres of tunnels lead deep into the rock interior. Enjoy a day full of fun and information at the Salt Mine Hallstatt for the hole family.

“Not worth the money- dubious health and safety standards”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

The Hallstatt mine was set up to be one of the highlights of our 10 day Eurotrip but in reality it turned out to be a bit of a nightmare! The cable car ride up to the mine entrance was beautiful and the viewing gallery gave incredible views of Hallstatt town below.

Entering the mine was fun and the guide offered the tour in both German and English. However after the first two stops she informed us she was rushed for time so more or less gave up on the English explanation at each pitstop. Normally I wouldn't expect any tourist attraction to offer the tours in English as well as the native language, but if this is a service they were offering they should have committed to it after taking our admission fees under false pretenses. I overlooked the informative elements in excitement for the mine slide- but after being pushed down by the guide before having any proper instructions, injuring myself and being shouted at for doing so- the whole experience was not entirely positive. The guide dealt with the injury in an aggressive and unprofessional manner- and apart from one other colleague who was very helpful, she was a bad ambassador for the establishment. The exhibition itself could have been great but I would recommend other mines in the region that could value their customers better and be more committed to offering a good experience.

“Hallstatt mine a top 2 hours”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

There are three salt mines in the region; we visited Hallstat's and reading reviews of the others it must be the best. First, its got a unique history, being worked by celtic miners way back in the iron age; you cross their burial ground to get to the tour start and the display and information in English and German is excellent. Second, its still a working mine, so current systems and information are part of the tour. Third, it has not one but two slides!!! plus you see many interesting displays, ride the train (with head just inches from the tunnel roof) - a really full experience. Unbeatable for families with kids :-) Also the restaurant at the top of the funicular is excellent value and the views are outstanding.

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

The place can be interesting and fun especially for children.
The tour includes sliding on wooden slides and a ride on the "new" miners train.
The temperature in the cave about 8 degrees Celsius. Despite receiving some clothes before entering the cave consider to take warm clothing especially for children
On the way to the cave there is a beautiful view overlooking Hallstatt, the lake and the valley.

“Expensive...”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

The view is indescribable! The ride up, down and salt mines were expensive but worth it. At the end of the salt mine tour, after going down two slides, you get to ride out on the mine train!!

“Fabulous!”
Reviewed 15 June 2014 via mobile

This was a fabulous experience! Great way to get some good exercise and wonderful views of Halstattsee, including the village below. The tour was just great, even with a class of elementary school kids in the mix. The tour guide provided commentary in both German and English and the tour itself utilizes a variety of multi-media presentations. Loved the slides. My husband almost buggered out when he saw them, but really enjoyed the experience. The interpretive signage along the route to where the tour starts is well done (in German and English). Only wish the presentation with miner Joe was somehow done in English too. Feel like we missed a piece since there was no interpretation for that little piece.
