We visited one evening in August. The beer was excellent, both the regular blonde and the dunkel. The waitress recommended the goulash, which was very good. The prices were quite reasonable. When we were ready to leave, the attentive staff were happy to arrange a taxi for us. We enjoyed our evening and would return if in the area again. The place is more like a pub than a beer hall but the staff and other customers welcoming and friendly.

We tried this restaurant for the first time in August. It was a lovely sunny lunchtime so we sat in the beer garden, an internal courtyard, open air, with trees. There are no airs and graces about the place and it's unapologetically rough and ready. The service is great and the waitress we had must have had a wonderful memory because she appeared to write nothing down and remembered everything we'd had when it came to paying the bill. We had a pork cutlet, weiss wurst and sausage and chips. All basic stuff but nicely done and I don't think I have had a tastier, juicier pork chop.

You can expect to share your table with other people but this is no problem and is quite good fun. We shared ours with an elderly couple from Klagenfurt. They told us that they always go to this restaurant and it's the best in the city.

The menu is mostly limited to traditional Carinthian favourites and the only non-traditional dish I saw was a Greek salad. They are flexible on accompaniements though and you can have potatoes, chips, spatzle, rice or whatever with your steaks or sausages.

The service was friendly and brisk and the two waitresses appeared to do a great job serving lots of customers. We didn't have the goulash but from the number of locals eating it around us, it seems to be the speciality here. I recommend this restaurant and we will go back.

A large tables, where you will certainly sit with several groups of friends or several families, and a friendly staff who will quickly find a place for you, even though it may seems impossible.

Pumpe is a traditional Austrian restaurant, which is main specialty - stew.

You must visit it.

“Pumpe” is the best known pub of Klagenfurt. Having existed since the nineteenth century, it does not seem to have undergone major changes of appearance in the last decades. Relatively new is only the fact that smoking is no longer allowed in the inside areas.

We went there on a Saturday for a late lunch. The place was still crowded when we arrived. Our naïve question posed to a waitress whether there would be a free table for us two made here reply something like: “Share a table with others wherever you find empty seats. This is a tradition here.” So we did.

The rustic furniture is made primarily of dark wood and let the place as a whole appear rather dim. Apart from old wainscoting the furniture is not really special. The somewhat chaotic decoration contributes markedly to the particular atmosphere of “Pumpe”. As long as the place was full, the enormous noise level was almost unbearable and sometimes made conversation onerous. They do not seem to compromise authenticity with a view to tourism. So, at the time of our visit most guests around us were locals.

The waitress fitted well in with the atmosphere prevailing at “Pumpe” by being efficient and very straightforward rather than outwardly friendly. The choice of dishes was limited, such that the menu consisted only of a single page. Of course I ordered the most renowned dish of the place, i.e. “Gulasch”. Our meals were served after a moderate waiting time. As expected, they were of a no-frills kind rather than being nicely arranged and decorated. However, they were savory. Portions were quite large and in view of the celebrity of “Pumpe” prices were reasonable.

All summed up, this the right place to go for a beer or two, but not the best choice for a relaxed lunch or dinner.
