“Nice hotel”
Reviewed 19 January 2014

New hotel has nice rooms and big balconies. It is linked to the thermal baths via an overhead bridge. Spa area is really nice with a great variety of saunas. Excellent choice for breakfast. A great find!

…you will probably return once you have been there.

Check-in/WIFI:
Not the best front desk in the world, but they do what they can, and they all speak german, english, and … italian, which is necessary, since the majority of guests are from Italy. Tiresome problems with magnetic room key cards and WIFI (passwords had to be renewed twice, only one device per password, and only one password per room….and in the end the internet connection was very slow, although permanently available in our room on the third, which is the top floor).

Rooms:
Good: Excellent design, modern, functional. Brandnew. Beautiful bath (although only shower, no bath tub). Superb room service, plenty of towels and bathrobes available at all times. Perfect air conditioning. Huge balcony door for quick airing, soundproof.
Bad: Walls rather thin. Pure polyester pillows and duvets, and the mattress is much too soft.….this is definitely not a four-star hotel standard.

Breakfast:
Confusion with the table system (each room has its table, but the table cards are re-arranged each morning, so that you have to search for minutes, and it may well be that your card has not yet been allocated). Tea is lousy and so is coffee. Buffet on a four-star standard, nothing too fancy.

Thermal bath:
This is why we came here. Overcrowded as usual, but as a hotel guest, you have free admission to the spa, and that is a beautiful spot with sauna, hamam and quiet room. Front desk ladies are quite friendly, but better ask what the local etiquette is (there are special towels for the hamam, and they make you ask for them….). Free entrance to the "members" wardrobe, which is very useful when you like to change from bathing to fitness clothes or vice versa.

Free fitness center entrance (9 a.m.-9:30 p.m.) with daily 3-6 full hour free classes of pilates, back exercises, gymnastics, zumba, aerobics, circuit training, with young, fully motivated trainers. Excellent fitness apparel, plenty of space, few people (because day guests in the thermal bath, which are the majority of visitors, are not granted access to the fitness area).

Best day time in the thermal bath: evenings between 7p.m. and 9:30p.m., especially in the heated outdoor pool. Lie on the bubble machine and take a look at the stars.

Overall:
The whole system (hotel + thermal spa) is brand-new, but staff is advised to be on the restrictive side, which shows in EVERY detail, starting from WIFI, breakfast, and admission times (fitness/thermal bath/spa) and leading right to that special towel for the hamam, for which you may have to queue. Childish, you may think, and yes it is. For some, it may spoil the good time they would have had otherwise, because the facility is basically well-run, and the staff is motivated.
Hello management, here is free advice: get fast free Internet on all rooms AND in the thermal spa, make free towels easily available for every guest in the spa area, drop that silly breakfast card system, and change opening times for the fitness area to 24/7. Need to raise prices ? Considering the overcrowding, a reasonable increase would be nothing but fair. In the end, there may even be money left to get new bed mattresses, pillows, and duvets.

Reviewed 30 December 2013

We spent four nights for Christmas at Karawankenhof. It is a pretty new modern spa hotel. We appreciated the cleanliness and the not worn-out interiors. Everything functioned well except for the wifi which was very slow and clumsy. It was in total disharmony with the otherwise modern profile of the hotel. A big plus go to the staff at the restaurant, reception and housekeeping. They were all very helpful and friendly.

Excellent base for touring this area of Austria
Rooms are modern clean and furnished with comfortable clean lines in minimalist style
The access to the spa facilities, pool and water slides etc is a real bonus
Previous comments about lack of cleanliness of the spa area were unfounded.
Cannot comment on food or restaurant as we self catered for breakfast and ate out at local restaurants
Only negative for me is that the grassy area for sunbathing was rather patchy and scrubby
Overall excellent

We spent 3 days in this hotel in July 2013. Wfife, husband and an 8-year old boy. The hotel is absolutely clean, rooms are spacious and everything is brand new. We had half board and the food in the restaurant was alright. Staff is very friendly and helpful. At first glance the hotel is expensive but since the food and the entrance fee to the bath are included it is worth the money.

Room Tip: North side rooms have view on the spa.

When you are willing to pay € 54.- for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children; swimming only) you at least expect friendly faces. We were told to remove our goggles for the water slide (though no sign indicated that) in a rather rude manner, and the front desk personel was reluctant to inform us on limitations (no access to Spa area, e.g. sauna).
Concerning the facilities, bathing areas are rather small for the amount of hotel guests and visitors, and what could have been a stunning view on the mountains is obstructed by wild modern architecture.
All in all, the restrictive athmosphere is spoiling the fun. If in the area, try the Hallenbad Klagenfurt instead: it's cheaper, cleaner, and people are REALLY friendly !

Pretty new renovated hotel, spacious rooms with big balconys. Very comfortable bathroom. Food excellent, even for the eyes, it is always "decorated" like a picture, very tasty as well, 4 different menues (as well for lunch as for dinner), in 3 weeks (full board) there was nothing repeated in the menue. Staff was very helpful, always friendly - never met such excellent service before.

Room Tip: Rooms opposite the traintrack are better (morning sun, and you don't hear the train)
