Reviewed 14 January 2013

We have recently returned from a very enjoyable Christmas Holiday in this hotel.

Room - We upgraded to a superior room which was spacious and clean. The view wasn't anything to get excited about but we were only on the first floor, so if you wasn't a better chance of a view of the mountains I would suggest asking for a higher floor. The only slight issue I had with the room was the temperature, for me it was too hot and I slept with the windows down and turned down the radiators, which made it acceptable overnight.

Facilities - The Hotel has a spa (which we did not use, so can't comment on) and a large bar and lounge area. There is also a gym and ski and boot room. The restaurant is located on the 1st floor, which can also be accessed via steps outside if you chose to have an afternoon snack.

Staff - We thought the staff were very pleasant, in particular the waiter that served us each night was very friendly and Peter and Peiter were also very pleasant. On Christmas Eve Claudia and Peter performed some readings by the Christmas tree (in English and German) which was a really nice touch and really got everyone in the festive spirit.

Location - I think the location is very good, you have easy access to both the Edelweissbahn and the Gamsleiten 1 and crossing the main road through town allows easy access to the main bars and shops (maybe 500 meters or so away).

Food - We thought the quality of food was very good, breakfast tended to be a buffet affair with a good range of cereals, fruit and cooked items. At breakfast you were also asked if you would like to select (not mandatory) a choice of menu options (mainly two but on one occasion three) for starter and main course. We had planned to eat out on one evening to try one of the local restaurants, however as every meal seemed appealing and the quality was of a very good standard we chose not to in the end. On Christmas Eve there was a 7 course meal accompanied (if you wanted to pay for it) by 5 wines to compliment 5 of the courses. The meals and the wines were very nice and made for a great night.

Prices - we initially thought the bar prices were pretty high as cocktails were typically 15 euros for 2 but this appeared to be in line with the general prices in town (sometimes cheaper) , and provided an alternative to going out if you felt like a queiter night. The hotel also had a wine cellar so there was a good variety of wine to have with your evening meal should you want to with prices for a bottle of red starting around 22 euros.

Minor gripes - When we checked in reception mentioned something about dinner. When we got to dinner on the first night we found we had been placed with a couple we checked in with. We assumed reception thought as we arrived together, we were together, so we asked for a separate table. This was sorted very quickly as the restuarant manager put us on our own table but I felt compelled to explain to the other couple that it was nothing personal, just that going on holiday as a couple we expected to be seated as a couple.

The only other minor point was on checkout when we asked if we could delay checkout (11 am) as we were due to be picked up at 2pm and thought there would be a number of people who already left through the day so checkout could be staggered. This was not allowed, but I have seen other hotels adopt it his stance.

As I said above these were only minor gripes and if we came back to Obertauern, we would have no hesitation booking to stay in Sporthotel Petersbühel again.

We were two families travelling together and booked two Stammhaus suites. When we arrived at just gone 11am both rooms were ready and our luggage was taken to our rooms for us. Both rooms were spotlessly clean and very spacious. Breakfast and dinner were of a high quality - always a good choice at dinner and our waitress was lovely. Some reports do not do this hotel justice. You can not pay your final bill with credit cards but we were told this when we booked so this is not a problem. You can get lift passes from reception, the boot room is warm and spacious, good food and reasonable prices for drinks. The skiing in Obertauern was great, the runs are not the longest I have done but they were in good condition for April and great to have nearly ski in, ski out in Austria! I would definately return to Obertauern and to the Petersbuhel.

We booked through Crystal for a weeks stay at the Petersbuhel in early March 2012. Having flown in on a early morning flight we arrived at 1 p.m. to be told our room was not ready, which having been up since 2 a.m. that morning was not what we wanted to hear! I guess we were just unlucky as the rooms for other guests checking in at the same time were ready for them. We were told to come back at 3 p.m. and not before. When we finally got our room it was a bit on the small side, old and tired and was in need of updating but on the plus side the bathroom was nice with fresh towels provided each day and we had great views over the facing ski slopes and a good sized balcony
We found the food to be of good quality. The weekly farmers buffet and desert buffet were excellent and the daily skiers snack (bread, various spreads and lovely cakes) was an added bonus and greatly enjoyed after a hard day of skiing.
The hotel has a large wellness area which my partner visited each evening, during our stay the naked rules did apply during our visit (so he tells me)
There is a large bar area next to the reception that has an open fire and flat screen tv showing mostly football, plenty of seating and a large range of wines and cocktails. You cannot add any drinks purchased in the bar to your room bill, but drinks ordered in the restaurant at dinner can be charged.
The hotel is not ski to door, but a very short walk down the road in each direction will take you to the nearest lift or on to directly on to a piste giving access to the lifts on the opposite side of the valley.
Overall we did enjoy our stay and would probably return, but would hope to be allocated a better room if we did.

Room Tip: May be worth paying a supplement for a larger, more updated room

Just returned from a weeks holiday in the Petersbuhel hotel March 2012. Having read the reviews we had mixed messages, we arrived and were shown into a tiny room miles away from the main part of the hotel when shown to our table for dinner once again put at the back miles away. I did politely ask if we could have a table in the window to be told by Claudia "owner" no we are fully booked on looking into this I found not to be true. We had to complain to the rep who was very helpful to be able to move. I found the food, owners and the hotel not up to a 4 star standard in fact who doubt if it met a 3 star. Having skied in Austria before I would not stay here again much better hotels in Obertauern.

Room Tip: Dont stay here

Stayed here for the first time in March 2012. Welcomed by a friendly receptionist in traditional Austrian costume. The room was comfortable with a south-facing balcony with a great mountains view. All we needed as we were there to ski. The staff were all friendly & helpful, especially the restaurant staff, in particular Hanna. The choice of breakfast buffet was excellent as was the 5 course evening meals. Plenty of choice so even the most fussy eater should be satisfied. In the afternoon the hotel provides a skiers snack with hot drinks & a wide selection of cakes & pastries after a busy day on the piste. There was plenty of snow during our trip but the road to the hotel was clear so we couldn't ski to the door. However it was only a short walk to the slopes, a skiers resort with lively apres ski if you want it.
