This was our first stop of our European tour. We chose this hotel dispite some of the negative reviews because of the historical interest the villa offered. This was the original house the Von Trapp family had lived in. We knew going into this that this was a more of a bed and breakfast style hotel. The staff takes a break and actually locks the doors from noon until 3pm so if you don't have a key you'll be waiting outside on the benches, and hope it's not raining there's no cover.
So we checked in our room was on the third floor with a small elevator. The halls are kind of loud with a communal bathroom. Most rooms are named after the children. Remember there are no tv's, phones, fridges or toilets in the rooms, ut we were on vacation to see Salzburg not to watch TV in another language anyways! The modern room had a cozy feel to it and so did the lobby living room were we found was the only place you access the internet. The stereo in the room had only 1 CD in it and I'm sure you guess what that CD was, "The Sound of Music!"
The staff was very freindly and we found them to be very open minded to couples of walks of life. Our breakfast was more of cold-cuts and cereal and pastries but the cappacino every moring was fantastic.
We met the manager of the hotel who was very friendly and offered us to join in the wedding that was taking place on the grounds. We declined but watched the fireworks later as they rivaled most U.S. Independence day celebrations.
This hotel is off the beaten path of Salzburg but easily accessible. If you arrive by public transportation, you can get off at the Aigen local train station, which was also used by the family.
Down the road is a small restaurant and grocery store along with an old church that is a must see for picture taking!
