“Villa Trapp - The Sound of Music”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2012

This was our first stop of our European tour. We chose this hotel dispite some of the negative reviews because of the historical interest the villa offered. This was the original house the Von Trapp family had lived in. We knew going into this that this was a more of a bed and breakfast style hotel. The staff takes a break and actually locks the doors from noon until 3pm so if you don't have a key you'll be waiting outside on the benches, and hope it's not raining there's no cover.
So we checked in our room was on the third floor with a small elevator. The halls are kind of loud with a communal bathroom. Most rooms are named after the children. Remember there are no tv's, phones, fridges or toilets in the rooms, ut we were on vacation to see Salzburg not to watch TV in another language anyways! The modern room had a cozy feel to it and so did the lobby living room were we found was the only place you access the internet. The stereo in the room had only 1 CD in it and I'm sure you guess what that CD was, "The Sound of Music!"
The staff was very freindly and we found them to be very open minded to couples of walks of life. Our breakfast was more of cold-cuts and cereal and pastries but the cappacino every moring was fantastic.
We met the manager of the hotel who was very friendly and offered us to join in the wedding that was taking place on the grounds. We declined but watched the fireworks later as they rivaled most U.S. Independence day celebrations.
This hotel is off the beaten path of Salzburg but easily accessible. If you arrive by public transportation, you can get off at the Aigen local train station, which was also used by the family.
Down the road is a small restaurant and grocery store along with an old church that is a must see for picture taking!

Thank you very much for your nice review.
There is only one fact which is not quite correct. All our rooms have TV and bathrooms ensuite, except our "Basic room" which is for people with a low travel budget. We also want to give them a chance to stay at the Villa Trapp.
Kind regards Christopher

The villa has three floors with the main reception rooms (lobby, lounge, breakfast room, kitchen and office etc.) on the ground floor. We stayed on the top floor which has rooms named after each of the Von Trapp children. We stayed in Agathe’s room – who was the eldest daughter of the original family. The Directors of the film changed the names and gender order of the film family – so it was not named Liesl!

The Agathe room was well appointed with an ensuite. It is not overly spacious as it is under the eaves. There is a delightful dormer window which overlooks the front of the house. So I enjoyed gazing out the window and admiring the view.

This stately building enjoys a quiet location about 10 minutes drive in non peak hour from the centre of Salzburg. If you arrive by public transport, you can get off at the Aigen local train station, which is directly next to the park and which was also used by the family. There is also a bus which leaves from close by. I used taxis in and out of town and they were about US$10 each way. Aigen is an upper middle class suburb and the neighbours are not happy about a hotel opening up, due to the increased noise and traffic. Tourist buses are forbidden from driving down the road. So there is little point visiting Villa Trapp if you are not staying there.
The grounds are large - the city’s largest private park. They are parkland style gardens – in the UK this style of garden is called ‘Capability Brown’, after a famous English landscape architect of the mid 1700s. Large expanses of lawn and tall trees, not manicured garden beds of flowers and ornamentals.

The managers of the hotel are very friendly and accommodating of special requests – booking taxis and even opened up the breakfast room half an hour early than scheduled as we had an early departure. The breakfast spread was delicious and comprehensive – certainly not a typical continental breakfast.

So what does this experience cost? We paid about 80 euro a night per person in a share room mid week in high season. It was more expensive than other lovely hotels in the old city of Salzburg but worth it for the experience if you love the film.

History, history....this is the place to stay to get the complete experience of the von Trapp story. Throw in the tour and yu have it all. Christopher, family and staff are very capable and welcoming. Service is discrete and professional. Do not expect this to be a five star hotel, it is a high quality bed and breakfast so 24 hr service is not available. Saying this, the staff will try and accommodate you when they are on site.
We had the West Wing suite on the top floor, which gave us a sitting room and two bedrooms. Ideal for a family of four. Could squeeze 6 in.
Very comfortable and the history is palpable. WiFi available in the downstairs parlour. Nice to gather and chat in the evenings. Plenty of parking.
Catch the 7 bus to and from town, only a 5 min walk to the bus stop from villa, and then 10 mins to town.
If you don't need to be in town, this is a great location. We used the bus quite a bit and found it easy.

I had this hotal booked for my me as a birthday treat as a massive fan of TOSM. My partner booked this hotel not only for the historic interest but of their supposid 'family friendly' attitude. The first dispointment was the rooms which were very clean but modernly decorated without much TOSM or traditional austrian theme in mind.
Our seoncd major issue was the lack of facilities within the rooms, when we booked we appriecated that there was not anylone avaiable in the hotel after 7pm, therefore we pressumed we would have a kettle or prehaps a fridge. Unfortunately none of these things were available within our rooms which made life difficult with a child under two particualr when hot water is required fo formula milk.

On one positive note the suite was warm!
On another very positive side the customer service we had from Christopher and and his wife was excellent, however their staff very much let them down. For example one morning at breakfast one of their staff was questioning us quite confrontationally with regards to arrangements Christopher and I had made for hot water., The waitress knew we did not speak German hwoever chose to discuss this in front of the other german speaking breakfast guests.Unfortunately we did not understanbd her and could not answer what she was asking of us. She made us feel very uncomfortrable in fromt of other guests. My partner ttried to discuss this with Christopher whom said thewr was no issue.

We felt Salserg was a stunning city which we would love to return to, think that we should look for somewhere closer to town for better value for money.

Room Tip: Maria suite was very spacious but characterless.

The Villa Trapp : an imposing Austrian-style house (with a railroad at the far end of the garden...rarely mentioned in reviews...), but that's it !
In vacation in Salzburg for a week, we hoped a lot from this stay and had booked a deluxe room (Werner's room) there for 6 nights, investing 259 euros per night. What a disappointment !!
Three reasons for that : a room clearly under the deluxe standard described on their website, a total lack of care toward guests and, the worst, a dishonest landlord who, after our return to France, refused to proceed to the refund of our last night, contrary to his wife's agreement during check-out, agreement which turned out to be pure hypocrisy.
About the deluxe room :
- white furniture made by IKEA : nothing to do with the "exclusive furniture" mentioned in the room's contractual description... (see pictures),
- no sofa, contrary to the room's description,
- a window partly broken, impossible to close during night (unfortunately pretty cold at that time),
- a lamentable tiny bathroom (cleaned up in a random way...) with no tub, a lavabo stuck between the toilet and a basic shower stall, white clinic-style tiling, no way to dry up your bath towel, toilet paper not refilled (you will have to "borrow" some in the shared WC) and no courtesy bathroom kit (just a bar soap and a sachet shampoo for two, not refilled for 5 days.....)
All this can seem anecdotic but shows that this house is not as serious as we could expect viewing the story and displayed respectability of the place. In fact, everything is invested in communication around the musical "Sound of Music", but this property is definitely everything but a warm and friendly guest house : nobody to welcome you after 7 PM, nobody to explain you why a baby crib crops up in your room one night (!), nobody to carry it off, nobody to take care of security over night, nobody to build up conviviality in the breakfast room, finally landlords invisible during the whole stay except when time of checking-out is coming...
Lastly, a VERY UNPLEASANT feeling when observing that the last night cancelled that the landlady had explicitly committed to pay-back, was not refunded. In spite of three months of action with the help of the booking website through which we had reserved this stay, we never saw our 259 euros back....
To sum up, the original musical seems to be now the Sound of Money !

For fans of "The Sound of Music" this is a no-brainer. Reasonably priced and not "touristy", with nice enough breakfast, room quality, and service that goes along with staying here. A 5-minute walk delivers you to the bus which will take you to the center of Salzburg in 5 stops. Very helpful with maps and suggestions was Christopher, who greeted us at the front door. Willing to answer questions and talk about the lives of the famous family. Free parking out front, located in a quiet neighborhood. Stairs and elevator available. Stayed in the oldest daughters room, who was portrayed as Liesel but that wasn't her name in real life.

Staff not available 24 hours. Had internet trouble in the common area, and if someone was available to point us in the right direction we could have accessed their network to plan our next stay at night instead of taking time in the morning.

Room Tip: The room we stayed in was nice, but others that we looked at were nice too.

Villa Trapp is a trap. I timely cancelled my July 24-26, 2011 booking as early as July 12, 2011. But Villa Trapp still charged me the full amount of EUR 312. When I emailed them the cancellation confirmation, they promised to refund the erroneous charge to my Master Card. But until now, three long months after, they still have not refunded me. I wrote them a letter requesting a copy of the email confirmation of their refund payment to my Master Card to prove that indeed they have refunded me, but they have been ignoring my emails. They are unresponsive and evasive especially when you are asking for a refund. This is clearly unfair business practice. May this serve as fair warning to all. May you never have go through the trap I have been caught in ...
