Villa Trapp

Certificate of Excellence

The main reasons for booking here was the novelty of it being the real former home of the Von Trapp family, and the good price. And we were very happy with our choice. It's run by a lovely family who make it feel more like a B&B rather than a hotel, yet the rooms are well fitted and the service is great.
We had a car so it was an easy couple of minute drive to the centre of Salzburg, and made a great base for exploring the greater region outside of the city.

Room Tip: When booking make sure you pay attention to the room size as some can be on the smaller side.

We were excited to stay in at Villa Trapp during our trip to Salzburg. The property is well kept and a bit off the beaten path, which means you are will need to take public transportation or drive to the old town. We had a car so it was easy to get around.

Our room was a simple room upstairs. The bathroom was large for European B&B standards and the bed was comfortable. There was plenty of closet space for clothes. The breakfast was lovely and the dining room was nicely decorated. We liked the idea of eating with the other guests in the morning.

Overall this was a very good value and a unique opportunity to stay in the original Von Trapp home. One word of caution - this b&b is very, VERY quiet! It didn't matter what time of day, you could hear a pin drop. It was a bit eery at night when the house was dark, but we thought it was a cool experience. If you're looking for nightlife or even background noise, this isn't the place for you.

Tip: Ask the owners to tell you a bit about the property. It will make staying here a more enjoyable experience when you know the history!

We love the Von Trapps and were elated to know their historic home was finally open to the public, and we could actually stay in their very rooms, for a modest price! Our immediate first impression left us giddy perusing the family photos and walking along the halls and stairway of the beloved Sound of Music family. Our room and ensuite bathroom was clean and fresh, with comfortable bed for us and crib for our toddler. Breakfast was ok--simple continental-- in a lovely family dining room. We spent two nights there and found it in an acceptable location for visiting Salzburg by public transportation. We also appreciated the staff who were friendly with our energetic toddler, and who later helped us look for a missing cell phone.
I would love to see this beautiful historical resource developed more fully however, both in terms of hospitality and in sharing the richness of the Von Trapp family story and talent. Why not have a daily or evening showing of the Sound of Music in the common room? Couldn't there be more period pieces and artifacts of the Von Trapps present in the house? It would be lovely if there were options for drinks and light fare in the evenings, particularly since there are no nearby restaurants for weary travelers who arrive at dinner hour.
Also, It would be much more useful to extend wifi coverage to other areas of the house besides the somewhat drafty drawing room near the entry of the building. The grounds could stand to be tidied a bit, and it would be a perfect spot to create a small park like atmosphere, with some benches and walkways, and especially a swing set for children. Without that, it does feel like something is missing.
There is so much that could be done to maximize the potential of the beautiful Villa. I hope the administrators continue to develop creative ways to protect and promote the Von Trapp heritage, and to expand a thoughtful service to travelers.

Thank you very much for your review. You describe our Villa as nice and tidy place with a lot of potential. - You are absolutely right. - When my wife and myself tried to open the place in 2008 we were full of enthusiasm to open the house and the park to the public, after the Villa was closed to visitors for exactly 70 years. There should be more than just a hotel. But then, and the media were telling our story to all the countries where the Sound of music is known,
we faced a lot of resistance from the local neigbourhood and all of the sudden the city government refused to give us not even a limited permission to be a hotel.
We had to fight for more then two years to get the "hotel garni" permission which means bed and breakfast and nothing, absolutely nothing may be done in the house apart from this permission. No events, no shows and no visitors without a valid booking.
This fight took more money then the renovation of the Villa itself. But we are still here and the house is open to our guests and the potential the Villa offers will be expanded.

As I stated in my review of our first stay at Villa Trapp, it is the ideal location if you would like a quiet and comfortable stay in Salzburg. The inn is located on the outskirts of the city so travelers can enjoy peacefully quiet evenings away from the city center. It is an easy 5 minute walk to the bus stop that takes you to the historic district. If I remember correctly, it seems the bus comes about every 20 minutes and the ride is fairly short - 10 minutes or less. What's more, parking is on-site and free, and there is even ample parking space if you arrive in a van or SUV.

Breakfast is family style in the dining room and is included for an additional fee. I believe we paid 10 euros each. It consists of typical German/Austrian fare to include coffee, tea, juice, an assortment of breads and spreads, cold cuts and cheese, boiled eggs, yoghurt and cereal. Breakfast items are restocked constantly. I believe breakfast is available from 8-10, but may have ended later.

Free wifi is available in the downstairs living room. This common area is very comfortable and tastefully decorated. The back double doors of the room open out to the terrace which provides breathtaking mountain views and outdoor seating. The grounds are rather large and provide plenty of space while maintaining a certain element of privacy.

On this visit we had five family members and we stayed in the Trapp Family Suite on the first floor. This suite consists of a small foyer with a closet and coat rack, a very large bedroom which sleeps two, and a huge living area with a pull-out convertible sofa which also sleeps two. The living room was outfitted with a large flat-screen television and dvd player. This suite has one private bath.

In all of our travels this inn receives my highest ratings for cleanliness. We recommend this hotel to our family members and friends.

Room Tip: The Trapp Family Suite is located on the first floor between the reception desk and the main living...

Stay here only if you're obsessed with the franchise, Sound of Music.
Staff weren't very friendly, breakfast wasn't fantastic either. Very noisy, but I guess that is to be expected with an older house. Everything was clean, tidy, and well looked after.
Not too far from the centre, and it does have lovely views of the mountains. We came in winter, so it would be a difference experience in summer.

I stayed here in the summer, expecting more of it. the place is nice, elegant and clean. the team is not necessarily the friendliest in terms of receival and catering to one's needs. the surroundings are indeed nice, there is quite a big forest where you can walk, and the city is easy to reach by means of public transport - around 15 min by bus.

The Villa Trap is nice historic hotel, not far from centar of Salzburg. In the villa is nice family atmosphere, but is not to much light in the house. I'm fan of the Sound of Music, for me staying in tis hotel was great experience.
