“Absolute gem”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

Well, I'm not sure why people grump about the rooms. We viewed several, and they were large in size with fabulous ceiling heights (we didn't stay in a suite, but I did peep into one, looked amazing!) The rooms are decorated simply, and in keeping with the era of the house (although don't explore the furniture too closely, what we saw was sadly from Ikea, but at least it was of a style to suit the house!). The bathrooms were small but hey, that's typical for Europe, and they were spotlessly clean. This is effectively and bed and breakfast type hotel with the quirky layout of having been converted from an old family home, not a high end purpose built boutique establishment and you get what you pay for.
Yes, the reception hours are limited, wifi access was a bit touch and go, and you'll get bar snacks rather than real food or room service, but we knew we hadn't booked a 5 star chain hotel, so we just worked around it. Good parking, and whilst the hotel is a little way out of Salsburg city, it was really easy to get to and fro just using the public transport system.
Lovely, rural location out the back of the property and there are a couple of little local convenience stores within 3 minutes walk in the neighbourhood. Breakfast was wholesome, staff were lovely, and we found some sensational restaurants nearby. For what it is, for what we paid, and will the added novelty of the Trapp family history, we thought it was great value and would definitely stay again.

We found the room as a last minute deal, we were backpacking so probably wouldn't pay normal price for somewhere so far out, but I am glad that we stumbled upon this gem.

The staff are lovely and very welcoming, happy to tell you the stories and history of the family and the beautiful house.

The only complaint I could even think of was that there were no working subtitles on the tv, but that is my fault for not learning the language. Lovely house. Good wifi, exceptionally clean and well equipped.

We arrived at 6pm to a very nice Elisabeth. She welcomed us warmly and gave us some good tips on where to eat. Our room was nice and comfortable. It is a bed and breakfast type of set up so for all who complain about the room I am a bit confused. One tip would be to put screens on the windows or include a small fan in each room. We arrived during the heat wave and had to sleep on top of the covers and leave the windows open. I didn't mind but had a few mosquito bites the next morning. Breakfast is a bit expensive for what is served as the standard European breakfast buffet. No one is there after 7pm....so ya the sign says no outside beverages but we brought a bottle of wine with us the second night and enjoyed it on the patio the next night. Very interesting history of the house, especially with Henrich Himmler. Ask Christopher about the history of the house. Give these people a break, they are trying to make a go of it in a historic home so there will of course be a premium to the room rate.

If the story of the von Trapp family has enriched your life then this is an experience you know how to value. Not a hotel, though the suites are typical of Austrian or European pensions, but that's not why we came. We were upgraded to the Baron's suite, including sitting room, bedroom and bathroom and were able to hold the bannister they slid down, head first! sit in the rooms they had to rent out these rooms after they lost their fortune and move upstairs, and where they must have debated whether to leave their homeland or not, with all those children. The Nazi past is here. The religious Order is here. It's a place almost unchanged that let's you experience for yourself what the movie, or the play, let's you only imagine.

Since the hotel was fully booked (you have to make reservations well in advance of your stay) we only took the tour. It was conducted in perfect English by the owner of the hotel and was absolutely fascinating. The real story is quite different from the American version of the sound of music, but no less interesting - the owner learned most of it from Maria von Trapp, the second-oldest daughter, whom he knew well and was in close contact with until her recent death at the age of 99. At the end of the tour, he shows a video which includes interviews with Maria von Trapp. This tour is a must!!

Firstly, we booked in September 2013 to make a reservation & unlike most hotels the £'s were taken immediately.....

BUT it was worth it as we stayed in Maria's Room......

Upon our arrival we were greeted by Elisabeth who was so helpful, explaining where to go, what you may want to visit & where to eat to suit your budget......
I had already done some groundwork on where to eat & one of her suggestions was Gasthof Schloss Aigen (one of my options) about 9 minutes walk away.

Elisabeth made a reservation for us & as we later prepared to walk there, offered us a lift, now that is Customer Service for you.......
We ate there both nights, first trying their recommended 'boiled beef', then opting for fish on the 2nd evening.
Not cheap, 120 - 150 Euros with wine.....

The stay here mixes the true story & the fantasy which we were lucky to experience BOTH....
By only staying 2 nights we had to make the most of our 1 full day so we headed off to Mondsee to the location of the Abbey used in the film & you can understand why they used this location.
From there we headed to Hallstatt which is claimed to be the most photographed town in Austria & it was exactly how it was shown in online reviews.... perfect.

Before heading back to Germany to visit friends, we took the bus into Salzburg to visit the 'real' Abbey where Captain von Trapp & Maria were really married.
We were told that as this is still an 'active' Convent we would not be allowed inside but the powers that be must have been looking over us & we were made to feel like VIP's.......
Many of the film scenes were shot here & this is where for us, reality & fantasy jelled.
We have watched the film so many times with our daughters & can now add another chapter to the story when watching it with our Grandchildren.....

Room Tip: Not the cheapest place to stay in Europe but I don't think anywhere in Austria is 'cheap'...

First off, you are paying for the experience. Don't be confused about that. This is for history lovers and fans of the Von Trapp family and the Sound of Music story. When I travel I like to stay in places with some sort of meaning or purpose if I can. I loved staying here. It is out of the city, in a nice quiet residential area. It is a nice and cozy place. The room was very nice and comfortable and the staff very friendly.
