We came across this restaurant on our wonderings and as it looked busy thought it was probably a good choice. We were right. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a seat and then share a table but that was OK. Atmosphere was great. Food fantastic and great service too.

The waiters run this place and they let you know it. My recommendation would be to make a reservation here so as not to go through the hassle we did. It was a very warm evening and we wanted to eat outside. It would be a "long wait" and we would have to share a table. We opted to have a beer inside and wait which seemed to annoy the staff. Eventually we were seated with a nice German couple who were well traveled and spoke English. It worked! The next plus was the food was fabulous. I had pork steak wrapped in bacon with very good scalloped potatoes and VEGETABLES (finally). My wife had a very good asparagus soup with a salad. This with wine and the two beers waiting was €44. Again, cash only.

We ate at Fidelen Affen tonight and really enjoyed it. I had the backhendl salat, which was excellent (dressing was perfect) and my husband enjoyed the Affen steak. Thankfully they offered a small portion of the schnitzel, which was just right for my 5 year old son, and they were kind to offer rosti as a substitution for the side salad. My daughter got artichoke risotto which was just okay, needed salt. It wasn't bad but a bit disappointing. We ended on a high note, however, with the pear and cashew strudel with honey sour cream ice cream. It was delicious and one of the best desserts I've had in Austria, and a nice change from some of the usuals. I recommend this place for dinner and in good weather would recommend sitting outside. They had a number of tables on a quiet part of the pedestrian zone and we were sorry it was raining.

Let's be straight right at the start - this is a pub restaurant that serves simple but tasty food and does it very well. The list of beers is as long as the short wine list which sets the tone. Food wise there is a decent menu with a few twists; we opted for a good mixed salad starter, Wiener schnitzel mains and a lime yoghurt mousse served with strawberries. All more than lived up to their billing. The schnitzel was a good size but opt for the smaller option if you are having a starter and a pudding. Service is good and friendly, the atmosphere is loud and busy, and prices are excellent on the value scale. Michelin food this is not; but proper food and great value.

So the food was fine...more traditional Austrian options. The service was friendly, and incredibly efficient, but not necessarily great. I finished the small portion of the gulasch feeling really bloated. That was then followed by what we learned was a bloated bill. Two extra charges were added to our bill...one for "pretzels" and another for "cookies"...if you believe google translation. Neither was ordered or even present at our table. Luckily we asked about the last two charges. It was taken off, but did not leave a warm feeling.

Supposedly known for their beer on tap...was fine, not great.
