Reviewed 13 December 2009

I stayed at this hotel for a weekend at the end of November 2009. I paid 152 euros for a double room per night, with breakfast included in the price, via an internet travel agency. (The price must have been that high -although I shopped around a lot- because it was for a weekend, and the hotel was almost full). The hotel's location seemed good at first, but after walking around the Old City Centre, I realized that it was not ideal, as it was farther away from the centre and closer to the train station (although not that close) than what one would want. From the train station it is a 700-meter 5-euro taxi drive. The hotel is very nice inside: It has 2 PCs located next to the reception, where you can browse the internet free of charge, however there is no free wi-fi connection available, which I consider a big minus point, given the money you pay and the general quality of the hotel. There were cases that both PCs were taken, so you could not surf the internet anytime you wanted. Now, the room: We were given a room on the first floor that was not even a double room: It had two single beds that could not even be connected. The view from the window was not good (roofs and windows from other rooms) but the main problem was that the room was, by all standards, small. I don't know if that is a general case for all rooms, but the important thing is that when we complained about the single beds, we were not given any other room (although probably this was due to the fact that the hotel was fully booked - it was a weekend). The bathroom was very nice and clean, and you could make your own coffee or tea inside the room, free of charge. Downstairs, there were 2 restaurants available (one was a kellar and the other looked like it was a higher quality one) and a bar, all of them isolated from the rest of the hotel (they even had a dedicated entrance from the back of the hotel for non-residents). From all these, we visited the kellar, which was very uniquely decorated, the food was very good and the prices were very reasonable). The breakfast was very very good, (served in a separate area) and had everything one could wish for, including chocolate croissants, etc. The SPA area was not exactly that, as I was told, for example, from the reception that I could not book a massage because it was a Sunday (!). However, there was a sauna and a steam room available, along with a swimming pool, which were very relaxing to use after a full day's sightseeing. The fitness area was fine as well, with a few running machines available for use, along with some other gym equipment. To sum up, it is a very good hotel, and if I were to visit Salzburg again, I would put it on my list, but not on the top. I would first try to find a similar quality hotel closer to the Old City Centre and with larger rooms available. If you do book there, try to make sure the size of the room is not small, and you will enjoy your stay.

The location is good if you'd prefer to walk and use public transportation (as opposed to having your own car). It's midway between the train station and the old town/Salzburg Dom/Fortress part of town. That means you'll do a lot of walking, but nothing is too far.

The rooms were nice and big, in good condition and clean. Very nice touches (complimentary bottled water, fruit tray, etc.). Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and seemed glad to have us there.

Breakfast service was a bit brusque (servers at the door checked you off a list, and announced loudly "not included!" if you weren't on a meal plan). Breakfast was the standard buffet fare.

Restaurant is the oldest beer cellar in Salzburg, with a nice crowd, friendly service and a varied, regional menu.

Hotel also had an exercise room, dry sauna and steam room, and the teeny-tiniest pool you've ever seen. It's about 2.5 strokes to get from one side to the other. Not sure what kind of exercise you could get in it, but it's a nice attempt.

Overall very happy with this hotel.

I stayed at the Crowne Plaza Pitter for two nights. I enjoyed my stay. Free internet station in lobby is a big bonus. The Pitter Keller was good for a few beers. The location was midway between the the tourist area and the train station. Easy walk to both. Stored luggage at noon arrival because room wasn't yet ready. After some exploration, we checked in a few hours later. The room was nicely decorated. The bed was large. Not uncomfortable, but not the best either.
Mixed thoughts on the bathroom. It was super spacious with a window that opened up to courtyard view with mountains in distance. The window was frosted for privacy. I LOVE a bathroom with a window. Nice natural lighting. However, be careful not to stub your toe or step on the metal threshold. I also wasn't used to scalding hot water from a bath sink. And don't slip or fall when water leaks from the side of the shower.

We enjoyed our brief stay at the Crowne Plaza Pitter. While not as large as a typical Crowne Plaza, the historicity and ambiance of this hotel is great. Access to it is easy - a 10-minute walk from the train station - and it is located only a block or so from the Mirabel Palace and Gardens. We also liked the fact that is it next door to the Stieglbrau restaurant which was a nice dining experience. From the Pitter it is about a 30-minute walk over the river to the old town, but one worth the time to view all the shops and historical sites. Based on its location, charm and friendly staff we would definitely recommend it!

I reserved our room for 3 nights at a rock-bottom price, but was surprised to find we had a spacious well appointed room.

The staff were helpful although we did get stuffed around a little when first checking in. We booked a king bed and got shown into room with two singles. After complaining we got offered another room that on inspecting was again a room with two singles. The location is good, close to everything. The pool in the basement was small but very nice.

Have no negative comments about the Crowne Plaza at all, very easy to reach from the airport, just hop on to a No. 2 bus just outside the terminal, we got off at the train station ( but you don't have to as we didn't realise at the time ) the bus stops just near the hotel on Rainerstrasse, as the bus leaves the station, Rainerstrasse is the main road it joins, and it is 2 or 3 stops away, ('Kongresshasse' stop).
We invested in the Salzburg card at the airport as we intended to visit all the sights, galleries etc., and we found it a great saving for us. It also gives you unlimited travel on the public transport, which is fantastic, worth a mention on it's own as the buses are frequent, exactly on time and take you everywhere around Salzburg..brilliant!
The hotel is elegant, and our room was as I described a ' home from home ' where comfort was concerned. We were upgraded to a suite on the 3rd floor, which was spacious with a seating area, and a lovely bathroom, the bed was very comfortable, everything was spotlessly clean. We could hear no noise from outside the room at all, or from neighbouring rooms, and the housekeeping was brilliant, very unobtrusive but extremely efficient. Bath robes, slippers etc., usual coffee, tea and mini bar, very adequate, and for a change, 'plenty' of fluffy white towels meticulously replaced, great attention to detail in the room maintenance.
The bar is a stylish and comfortable place to relax in, the bar staff were extremely polite and attentive.
We didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food, but had one attempt at eating at the Pitter-Keller...came to the conclusion we wouldn't be served for quite a while as staff were very thin on the ground ( 2 ) for a busy restaurant, we decided to fill ourselves a bit sooner elsewhere, may be good though even though we couldn't wait!
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Crowne Plaza as a place to stay in Salzburg, it is perfectly located, easy to get to, and to navigate around the city as the main sites are within walking distance, if not..just hop on and off the buses!
