“Great views and great exercise”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Wear good shoes and hike up the hill to see great views of Salzburg and a nature park right in town. Interesting church/statues and scenery. Worth a hike. Bring a picnic if you like. We went to the Delitalessen...an Italian deli for our picnic basket

“Best Views of Salsburg's Old Town”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

The most beautiful views of Salzburg can be seen from Capuchin Hill. This is an elevated area across the Salzach River from Salzburg's "Old Town". The entrance to the Kapuzinerberg road can be found off the tourist shopping street known as Linzergasser. Look for an old stone archway with a narrow steep road going up with an old stone walkway. Kapuzinerberg rises very quickly from the shopping area and can be driven if you have a car. This is a steep walk, but can be done if you take your time.

When you get to the where the road levels off, there is a small parking area here. From here, you can take the Basteiweg and walk along the old Hettwer-Bastion wall which overlooks the ‘Old Town”. This is a steep up and down trail, but the views are breathtaking and photo opportunities are around every corner. The trail goes for about 2 kilometers and comes out on top of the hill which is a beautifully wooded area. From the parking area, you can also head into the woods on a paved trail. This will eventually take you to the Franziskischlössl which is a small defence tower that was part of the 17th century city walls. The Franziskischlössl is situated at the most exposed point of the Kapuzinerberg and home to an inn which is a popular hiking destination.

Development of this area began during the Middle-Ages as a strategic counterpart to the Salzburg Fortress across the river. The Trompeterschlossl (Trumpeter’s Castle) was a fortification that served as protection of the eastern bridge-head of the only bridge crossing the Salzach. Around 1600 AD the fortifications gave way to a monastery for the Capuchin friars and took on the name Kapuzinerberg (Capuchin Hill).

From the Franziskischlössl, you can either walk back to complete the circle or you descend back to the city along Steingasse, in which case you will end up in the area of Schallmoos where you can catch transportation.

This is a great way to spend several hours in the beautiful outdoors of the Salzburg hillsides.

“Worth the climb”
Reviewed 15 August 2013

Steep way up the stairs, especially hard on a hot day, but worth the climb when you get there for the view over town from the other side. Don't forget to take water and do stop at the small chapel on the way there.
