Domplatz Market

Domplatz is the huge open courtyard or Plaza in front of Salzburg Cathedral. It is in the centre of Residenzplatz & St.Peter's Abbey both magnificent structures. The column of Virgin Mary in the centre is a beautiful piece of sculpture. There is a kind of mini market at one side, horse carriage rides take you through the imposing arches of Domplatz to Residenzplatz & aroud St.Peter's Abbey all wonderful examples of barouqe architecture. The grand buildings surrounding the square transports one back to the regal life style of the monarchs.A wonderful place to spend some time with a must visit to the Salzburg Cathedral.

Amazing Christmas market from a pure look and feel perspective. However, as someone who required gluten free options I found it near impossible in this market amongst the strudel, pretzels, raclette on toast, gingerbread and all other baked goods.

However, there are a few stalls you can at least get something to eat like - Mandle (sugared, roasted nuts), chocolate coated fruits (dark, milk and white chocolate), toffee apples, artisan chocolate blocks etc. Nothing meal worthy as such but at least something to line the stomach if you choose to also partake in the mulled wine or "gluhwein" to the locals. My personal beverage of choice was the "Hot White Russians" which were to die for.

My journey during Advent of 2017 included a visit to Salzburg, Innsbruck and St. Wolfgang in Austria and Rosenheim in Germany, where we were staying in the hotel at a place called Traunreut. Salzburg, the first place on our list, is a very impressive city, especially at night when everything sparkles and shines from the lights that light up for the Christmas fair. We have seen the main square of Domplatz, where there is a baroque cathedral, a large fountain, an Archbishop's Residential palace and some beautiful old buildings. We wanted to see the city from a bird's eye view and we climbed to the fortress called Hohensalzburg, located 120 meters above the city. It can be reached by foot or by funicular that we used. Be sure to visit this fortress that offers a superb view of the city and surrounding area.
As a hometown of Mozart, the legendary composer, Salzburg has two museums in memory of him. We visited the house where he lived, it is very interesting and it is worth visiting.
On the other side of the river, across the impressively decorated bridge, there is a baroque castle of Mirabell, originally built in the 17th century, where is a town hall today, surrounded by a large park full of statues and fountains. This is an unavoidable attraction as well.

The Christmas Market outside the Dom/Cathedral was absolutely magical! We visited 3 nights, and just roamed through the stalls, listened to the musicians, and soaked in the holiday magic. Lots of families, lots of couples, lots of tourists - but not an overwhelming crowd. Everyone in fine spirits!
Note: I don't like wine. I don't like gingerbread - but something special happens when you take a sip of the mulled wine (gluhwien), and a bite of gingerbread :)
