Most famous for a sceene in Knight and Day. Large rooms but not allways so nice. Great outdoor roof ar and nightclub. Perfect loaction for a stroll in the old city. OK breakfast with a greta wiev of the old fortress across the river.

Location in city was great. Room was large as was the bathroom. Restaurant was great and the view was excellent. On the downside. Dark hallways and the floors were squeaky. No coffee in rooms. Nice Stay

The location of the hotel is really good. Just less than 5 mins walk to all attractions sacher hotel is 1 minute away by walk. You can try the famous cake. Breakfast us really good spread with view of the fortress. Only room a little old but it is fine. Great hotel for city tour.

We picked Hotel Stein because of the location, and we were not disappointed. Perfect for walking around town, shopping, sight seeing and all the tours start close by or most of them even pick you up from the hotel lobby.
We found that all the staff were very helpful, knowledgeable, efficient, and a porter was only too happy to offer to carry our luggage up to and from our room. Our room was larger than expected, warm, and had 2 triple-glazed large windows with fantastic views of the Fortress and river. The bathroom was large and luxurious with lovely tile & marble, plenty of hot water and fresh soft towels every day. We had a large king size bed with fresh linen every day.
What more could you want? It is a very old building and it also has squeaky parquet flooring - but that is part of its charm, it is not a fault.
The high quality champagne breakfasts did not suit our pocket or style, and we were happier to enjoy a coffee and snacks on the terrace, and then seek out local restaurants for our meals, but undoubtedly the views from the rooftop were brilliant.
Yes - there is no mini bar, no kettle for tea/coffee, no mini soaps, but there are plenty of fantastic places to eat and drink close by and there are large fixed soap dispensers in the bathroom. So - again, not a problem.
We enjoyed our 5 day stay here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had fantastic warm weather for the time of year, and would recommend the Hotel Stein to anyone !

Room Tip: Rooms facing the front have a fantastic view of the Fortress and the river.

The location of this hotel is amazing, and the views over the river and fort are fantastic - especially from the 7th floor - we had breakfast on the last morning in the sunshine on the terrace and it was truly amazing!
We had the feeling they are relying on the view and location to get people to stay and not bothering too much about anything else. Don't get me wrong, we were very comfortable but little things were annoying - the wifi is a joke for a start! The floors creak and are very noisy - not just the odd board, but every step! Bed was a bit scruffy and a bit soft. Cleaners didn't seem to do much apart from make the bed.
However, you couldn't have a better location in Salzburg, so central for everything and we had a wonderful weekend. Just a shame they "could try harder" and the staff (especially at breakfast) made you feel a bit like you were a nuisance!
Having said that, wouldn't have wanted to stay anywhere else as the location more than made up for the problems

Room Tip: Ask for a river view

It isn't easy finding a good hotel in Salzburg but we decided on the Hotel Stein after reading Tripadvisor reviews.

The good stuff:
a) Breakfast was the highlight - a great selection of food, high quality and some excellent staff made our breakfast so enjoyable each morning.
b) Breakfast - for the view - the restaurant is on the top floor (7th) and has amazing views over the old town with indoor and outdoor seating
c) The room was huge and had some nice designer features
d) The bed was huge and comfortable
e) Location was good for both sides of the river

The less good stuff:
a) The rooms are a little scruffy and the cleaning staff seem to do the absolute minimum so they can rush off home (they don't vacuum every time a guest checks out).
b) The floorboards creak terribly so you will wake up your partner as soon as you get out of bed - I don't mind so much because it is part of the character of the building but you need to be aware.
c) The hotel elevator starts up a flight of steps so you need to clime half a floor before you can get the elevator
d) The landings and corridors are very dark and dingy - a strange style choice because the building is attractive and bright corridors/landings with mirrors would have worked well
e) Parking is EUR 15 per day which is quite steep and is 600m away
f) The internet connection we had was very poor and kept dropping
Overall I would probably try another hotel if I was staying in Saltsburg again but the Hotel Stein has some very good qualities.

Stayed here in 2011 and again a week ago. It had gone down hill. Both times we had to get rooms changed. The zebra motif does not fit for Austria. It needs new TLC and management. Yet, the terrace and breakfast are fabulous with an amazing selection and view. The rooms were clean but it just needs help.

Room Tip: Higher floors to avoid street traffic. Inspect the room before you move in.
