“Wanted: heavy sleepers”
Reviewed 28 August 2011

So you want to stay in Salzburg - maybe just for a night - and therefore you don't want it to cost the earth.

Well this is where Amadeus starts to look attractive: single rooms from 93 Euros in high season (I know that seems high for a 3 star but we are in Salzburg); central location & only a short walk to the main sights in 10 minutes, accesible for all but the really unfit; nice photos on the website of the rooms accented with antiques; and located in a pedestrian zone next to a baroque church.

However, it's when you stay that it all starts to unravel. The fact that there's only one young girl on reception who seems to run the whole thing; that there is no-one on site from 6.00pm to 7.00am; that the rooms are (in my case) a slight throw back to the 70s/80s: all of this is only slightly countered by the immpecable cleanliness of the bathrooms and the fact that, yes, the hotel is so near where you want to be.

The real down side is when you need to use the hotel for the one thing you booked it for: sleep. I stayed on a Friday, and you'd need to sleep as solidly as those in the neighouring St Sebastian's churchyard, to gain a decent night's rest here. Throughoout the night, and until the light is breaking through, you'll be woken by revellers walking (perhaps, crawling) drunkenly along the pedestrian zone on their way home from either the nightclub a few doors down or other drinking establishments in the old town. I'm no light sleeper, yet was woken every 20 minutes or so by the shouts, yells, and what might have passed for singing. Or fighting.

So should you stay? Maybe...if it's a Monday, you've got earplugs, and you are a deep deep sleeper (remember there are also the bells from the next door church). Otherwise think twice. Oh and turn the shower on about 10 minutes before you step in .. the hot water will have come through by then.

The positives first. Extremely well located for walking to all attractions around Salzburg and convenient 15 minute stroll from main train station. Our double room was very spacious and had Ok size ensuite. Comfortable bed and everything clean and in good state of repair. An attractive breakfast room with all the usual accompaniments. A top of range 3 star hotel.
Despite positives I would never stay there again or recommend it for other than perhaps a 1 night stay. The hotel is next door to a church whose bells toll every 15 minutes from 6am to 10pm with occasional extra serenades. No room would be spared the sound. Also some 12 of the 25-30 rooms are street facing, and despite double windows, restaurants and bars opposite and nearby are patronised until sometimes 1am. Also revellers returning home can be heard in the street anytime until sunrise. Delivery trucks arrive before 6am so impossible to leave windows open. If going out late, sleep through the day would be challenging despite what you had been drinking! Forget sleepins. Rooms are not air-conditioned but corridors are, impossible to understand the logic! No room refrigerator and in room safe not secured, pick it ip and take it home! Free wifi only works in lobby. Curtains do not block out light from outside.
Overall give it a miss.

Upon arrival, the girl behind reception fastidiously ignored us and continued reading a documents for a full minute or more before dismissively pointing at her colleague who reluctantly came across to check us in. This receptionist went through the motions but offered no information about hotel services or about Salzburg itself.

The breakfast was a fairly limited choice, but the stand out quality was the staleness of the bread, the rolls and even the cereal! Some days we were offered coffee, others not.

The room itself was very pleasant with a view over a graveyard (not everyone's taste I admit!), comfortable beds and a decent size bathroom. The shower pressure an temperature varied greatly however, and on one occasion there was no hot water at all.

Overall a most disappointing experience and we would certainly not go back.

The position of this hotel is good and for an old building the rooms are lovely, bathrooms clean and the breakfast is good. We enjoy a nearly week stay and if you like doing everything yourself without any annoying you then this is your hotel.
f you want the staff to help you with anything - well that is another matter.
The staff don't seem interested enough to help with much and they don't seem to speak any other language other than their own. We didn't find them unfriendly they were just not much use and really didn't know much. They just like sitting on the front counter not helping at all so most were left up to the own devices at breakfast. The afternoon tea is a bit of a joke so don't think this is a plus as it isn't. Normally this would not be a problem, however, at the price you are paying you would expect a little bit more personal service.
The internet was one computer near the check-in desk which is OK to use after they left because you had privacy. It is a German keyboard but you can get around that if you work slowly. A fairly good service on the internet.
Parking is a little different, in that you have to park in the central carpark about 400m down the road and walk up to the hotel. No cars allowed on the street at night and it can be difficult during the day with shop delivery trucks blocking the whole mall.
Be aware check-in time is flexilbe as the whole time we were there the staff were not ready to take check-ins at the right time as they were still cleaning rooms. In fact people were told to put their bags downstairs and wait. This was everyday we were there and some people didn't get into their rooms near 5pm or later. This is what indicated to us what the problem was at the hotel, short of staff. A staff shortage could mean that the staff didn't find them communicative either but not our worry.
In summary, a good hotel where you are left to your own devices, great breakfast, excellent location, clean, near restaurants and shops, fairly good size rooms, warm, quite location, over-looking graveyard one one side and the main mall on the other, good tv service, one computer near the front desk for internet which work fairly well and generally an OK hotel.

The hotel is in a very convenient position, and the lady at the reception was friendly. The room was adequate, but the toilet had not been flushed by the previous occupant, and this leaves an impression that's hard to forget. The bed was a kind of wooden cot, perhaps modelled on the very bed slept in by Mozart himself? It might have been comfortable by 18th century standards, but was too short and hard for me.

The buffet breakfast was above average - it even included smoked salmon, and there was a good variety of breads and pastries. However, you would need a degree in electrical engineering to understand how to use the coffee machine. I had several attempts at extracting coffee from it, and ended up with a cup of hot water, a cup of hot milk, and a cup that was somewhere in between. Then I gave up and bought a coffee in a nearby cafe.

Oh dear. this review might not be as unfavourable as it had been for a lot of reasons - that there was a problem with the room booking in that my booking description didn't match the hotels description, I got one of the older and less recently refurbished rooms, and if I hadn't stayed around the corner 2 years ago at a hotel which was streets ahead.

I had paid for a hotel with Wifi access and a double room and got neither. my room, a superior single, didn't meet that description. It was the single most uncomfortable single bed I've ever slept in, mattress hard, and too shallow for the bed, so I hit and bruised my legs on the edge every time i got out of the bed. pillow (only one supplied) was unsupportive and uncomfortable.

wiFi is only available in reception, which has a PC and a bench which is hardly conducive to making people want to stay and check in online.
Breakfast was not great, poor selection of choices, always whole milk and I'm lactose intolerant.
The service on the desk was hit and miss too. the lady on weekday mornings was always helpful and friendly. the afternoon and weekend cover were unfriendly, rude, and when they were asked for information provided incorrect answers.
If you want to stay on the Linzergasse, there's a hotel around the corner which is much better.

There are some better looking rooms, which other guests may have had.

Dear Guest!
I am very sorry to hear we could not satisfy your expectations!
We are a three star Hotel and as such we do indeed offer a very good service and wide range breakfast.
Our free internet terminal and the free wireless axcess at our lobby is a service for our guests we do happily provide. The internet axcess in the rooms is nowhere indicated, sorry to hear you expected this.
I apologize and send my warm regards

We found this hotel on the Internet and we were not disappointed at all. At first glance it looks a little bit understated, but the rooms were fantastic, big and elegantly furnished in a typical austrian style. The only negative aspects were that in the bathroom the bidet is missing and that the heating is too high. Also the nearby church's bells begins at six o'clock and at seven they fully sound to call to the mass. The breakfast is gorgeus and the service is kind and serviceable. There is a useful wi-fi spot which works in the reception area. The management suggested some very good restaurants in town.
