We originally wanted to stay in the old part of Salzburg, but the hotels we were interested in were booked — and thank goodness, because otherwise we never have stumbled upon the Schloss Leopoldskron! The hotel sits right on the lake of The Sound of Music fame (in the movie, it's the lake behind the von Trapp house, and the lake into which Maria and the von Trapp children fall while boating!). While our room was not in the Schloss itself (it was in a building right next door that also houses the reception), breakfast is served in the Schloss. Our hotel room was not extravagant, but suited our needs well, and the breakfast spread was nice.
The highlight of this hotel is its location — the beautiful lake, the pretty hotel grounds and gardens, and its tranquil location away from the tourist bustle of Salzburg's old city center. We were, at first, nervous about staying outside of "old town" Salzburg, but in the end it was much nicer; it's only a 20 minute walk to Salzburg Cathedral, through beautiful fields and up a steep but short hill (the top of which affords a fabulous view of Salzburg). We would certainly stay again at Schloss Leopoldskron if we return to Salzburg.
and (b) the welcoming, very helpful staff - they helped us arrange dinner reservations, events, etc. and were very gracious.More
