Kolpinghaus Salzburg
Reviewed 3 August 2013

1. My experience here had been bad from the moment I arrived. It is not hard to find, but it is far. Finally I reached around 1:30. In the booking site where I'd booked from, they said check in time was between 2pm-10pm. My travel time had been long and I couldnt wait to get to my room. I told the person in the reception that I was checking in and she told me the rooms werent ready and to wait. I waited until 2:30 then I asked another receptionist again and she said it still wasnt ready. I was sitting RIGHT IN FRONT of them. Literally. I asked her to let me know when it was ready so that I could go in. I asked the other girl that too. I waited and waited until it was 3:30 and I was getting frustrated by the minute. Finally I couldnt bear it any longer and asked at the reception again if my room was ready. Apparently both the girls had forgotton about me (there werent many people checking in during that time anyway) and the room had already been ready way back. They murmured a half hearted apology and led me to the room. (later I checked other websites too, and some had 2:00pm check in time and others had 3:00 pm check in time.. this needs to be straightened up).

2. I was VERY disappointed when I saw the room. It was in the basement and was very dingy looking and was apparent that it was not cleaned properly. There were dead insects all over the floor and the table and a few other alive ones were walking on the floor and found one also on the bed. There was no washroom in the room also and I was not told where it was during check-in, nor was I told where the kitchen was or anything else that I had heard them reciting to the other ppl who checked in.

3. I finally found the washroom and that was dirty as well. I found it difficult to put my stuff anywhere because it looked so dirty. Parts of the shower had molds in them and again, the washbasins and its surrounding area hadnt been cleaned properly, if not At all ! When I got back to the room to hang my towel, I encountered moths. Again, getting more and more disappointed.

4. There are only 2 kitchens, on the 1st and 3rd floor for the whole hostel (which is quite big). the kitchens are not big anyways, maybe because no one uses them since there are no dishes to cook with. You need to have all your own dishes if u wish to make anything. Also, the fridges have lockers inside them and you need a key from the reception if you want to keep anything in the fridge.

5. The only advantage that I can think of, of this place is that you can hire bicycles directly from this place, as in Salzburg everyone seemed to ride a bike around town. But again, its only a plus point to people who actually use the facility.

6. The wifi is only available in the lobby, whereas it was advertised as "Wifi available in all areas". That was a big disappointment too.

7. There is no common room/ area where people go to mingle (maybe like a bar). There is a cafeteria which closes by 10 and thats it.

8. When I awoke the next day, there were bites all over my thighs... maybe the bugs on the bed had something to do with those.

9. It is definitely NOT like your usual hostel even though there are dorms here. If you are looking for a fun place to stay with lots of young people and to have fun, I definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND this place to you. It seems this is mostly for older people with families who come with cars and kids and their own dishes to cook with.

Room Tip: I stayed at Meninger in Salzburg before this and it was excellent. definitely recommend that over t...

My friend and I stayed here whilst interrailing. We were split up into different rooms (which never happened at any other hostel we stayed in in Europe) and though the reception staff were reasonably friendly, it didn't help when I was in the basement and he was on the fourth floor. Everything was clean and fine and perfectly nice but it felt very clinical and business-like.

Also the woman taking tickets at breakfast was completely rude and disgusting, yelling at us about payment when we had already paid, she just hadn't been there to take the ticket. Not cool.

My friend and I booked in this place as we were planning a short trip for Salzburg. All we wanted to see was just the 'Sound of Music' really!!

We were on a budget trip and Kolpinghaus was offering something within our budget. It is about 20 minutes walk from the main train station of Salzburg.

The place is quite a bit of a walk from the city center. However, it has a nice walk next to the river to the city center. If you don't feel like it, city center is just a couple of bus stops away to Mirabellplatz. Salzburg is a small city, therefore it is easy to get to anywhere by foot/bike.

You feel like you are back to school again as you enter the building. We stayed for 3 days and we thought the place was fairly good for the price we pay. Everything was fairly good I have to say - from the cleanliness of the bathroom to the quality of bed.

We have a room facing the track field and from our room we could see the Fortress and Alps.

If you are looking for something quiet, this is good enough. However, if you are looking for something more happening to do at night. Perhaps you might want to consider somewhere downtown ^-^

I'm giving this a bit of a lackluster review because the good and the bad sort of balance things out. I'll start with the bad, then finish positive with the good and throughout I'll offer some tips for those staying there (which I'd recommend).

Bad:
1) Like many hostels, when it's Friday or Saturday it's a bit noisy. However, Kolpinghaus did a good thing in that they put a balcony on the fourth floor outside the building and in theory, because it's outside, noise is minimized. The problem? The fourth floor is where they stick the families with the kids. My kids were kept up 2 nights out of 3 until the wee hours by fun loving but incredibly selfish 20 year olds. Hey Kolpinghaus, I think you've got to change this arrangement. TIP: if you want sleep and it's Thursday, Friday or Saturday then try to switch rooms if you are beside that deck! Reverse if you want to be close to the action...
2) Laundry. They've got laundry machines which is a fantastic plus for backpackers. Plus, it's cheap like borscht at only 80 eurocents a washing load! Wow! The problem? First of all finding it. Second of all, figuring it out. I know it's Austria but it would be awesome if someone took the various typed laundry instructions and pumped them through Google Translate and ran off another set, say in English, French, Spanish for starters. I learned quite a bit of german by necessity but lost several months of my life in frustration. Even with directions, it's weeeird and I would have been confused even if I spoke fluent Deutch. You've got to scrape together a boatload of 20 cent coins and the front desk ran out. The cafeteria staff wouldn't change any for me (more on this later). Only 20 cent coins will do. Second, you've got to go to the breaker panel near the door to the room. Open it. Inside are 3 boxes labelled washer 1, 2 and "trockner" which means dryer. You'll notice a little dial with numbers on it and a teeeeny little slot in it. You put the coin in (keep trying while jiggling/twisting the dial...it will go in) and then turn the dial. What you are doing is buying POWER for the appliance to run! Ingenious, yet infuriatingly novel. I mentioned it was cheap and it was, but you had better have tons of coins for the volt-sucking "trockner" which eats coins like Pacman, brother. On average one coin will buy about 3 minutes of power, and as I said the coins are hard to come by around here. TIP: make sure you go to the store and buy a roll of 20 cent coins. Heck, set yourself up in the lobby and sell 'em for 50 cents apiece. I tell you, I would have bought them.
3) Cafeteria Staff: I already mentioned they wouldn't give me change. Even though I bought something! And I saw that they had tons!! At breakfast (which is amazing by the way) I made the mistake of making some sandwiches for the kids and I got absolutely yelled at by the woman clearing dishes. Apparently, you've got to pay for them and I had no problem doing this but it was my first day and I didn't know. When I did pay for them, she tried to shortchange me.
4) Wireless: It only operates in the lobby and even then sporadically. I couldn't rely on it. For me, I'll choose poorer living conditions so long as I've got decent connectivity to check things out, book other places and write annoying tripadvisor reviews. Seriously, this is perhaps the worst problem that should be addressed by the hostel as I know that many travellers consider lack of good wireless a dealbreaker.

And now the good to great...

1) Rooms: Ours was extremely comfortable with big windows, desks, tons of storage space and very comfortable beds. This place is living quarters for university students 8 months out of the year and so it's built for comfort and storage; two things you ordinarily find lacking in most hostels. Plus, you get your own shower, sink and toilet which is clean, bright and full of hot water. Awesome showers. Even though they are a hostel, they provide all bedding and towels AND, like a hotel, clean your room every day and give you fresh linen. Wow!
2) Front Desk Staff: Absolutely wonderfully helpful and courteous. In fact, all the staff was great except the Evil Cafeteria Minions...
3) Free breakfast: Excellent free breakfast and buffet style so it's all you can eat and all the coffee you can drink. Superb! Tip: if the cafeteria staff is coming to replentish something, get out of the way or they will physically bump you away...even if you have a bowl of cereal or a coffee in your hand...not that this happened to me or anything. EVIL!
4) Wired: Though their wireless sucks as mentioned, each room has an internet cable to hook up your computer. If you are travelling with a laptop, it's blazing fast. Too bad if you've got an iPad or phone though...back down to the lobby for you!
5) Location: once you find the place, it's incredibly easy to get central. TIP: DON'T go back the confusing way you came here by walking/bussing from the train station. Instead, hang a RIGHT out the door and walk along the awesome river pathway to the main parts of town.

And that's all I gotta say about that. In sum, avoid the 4th, get some change and steer clear of the lunchroom fraus and you'll have a great time at Kolpinghaus!

Well I have reserved this hotel as a last minute solution in Tourist office as Salzburg was busy due to a Mozart Festival. When arrived building give you an impresion of green metal box not nice must say however inside hotel were very clean and receptionis was quite helpfull (speaks not bad English). To find a room was more tricky as there is few corridors which are slightly confusing lots of door to open. Having big bag might be difficult. Room more less simple, clean and got nice bathroom. Good value continental breakfast average as whole rest.

Austrian students have a nice place to live! Was nicer than the Quality Inn outside of Paris! Breakfast was filling and extensive. Our group was scattered throuout the rather large and seemingly neverending hallways of the facility.
