Description: History, gastronomy, culture and civilised social life come together in the elegant surroundings of the St Peter Stiftskeller, the best address in Salzburg, Mozart's sublime home city. Inside the walls of a Benedictine abbey at the heart of Salzburg's colourful Old Town, the Stiftskeller has been a popular meeting place for princes and bishops, citizens and merchants for more than a millennium. A documented visit by Charlemagne in 803 is its claim to be Europe's oldest hostelry. More than a restaurant, the Stiftskeller remains Salzburg's rendez-vous of choice - a place for good eating and drinking, of course, but also for entertaining, exchanging ideas and being seen. Townsfolk and tourists mingle with travelling celebrities, gourmets and business folk. Splendid private rooms host fashionable receptions. Its location between the Cathedral and the Festival Theatre puts the Stiftskeller at the centre of everything, in this intimate and cultured small city. The arcaded inner court is the heart of the Stiftskeller with a refreshing atmosphere of an interior garden. A welcome refuge from the heat of summer in the city, it's a place to relax after shopping or sightseeing, for a light supper before the opera or a late bite afterwards. International stars come and go during Salzburg's summer festival, and no one makes a fuss. For a private party or a group celebration, the Stiftskeller has ten beautiful private rooms varying in style and size to suit any event from a catwalk fashion show to a more intimate family gathering. The Baroque Hall comes with full regalia of gilded stucco. Other rooms offer more restrained elegance, cosy wooden panelling, rough and rustic stonework or a more edgy modern decorative scheme.

Described as Europe's Oldest Restaurant, we walked through the picturesque downstairs with a garden feel, to the formal rooms upstairs. The staff was courteous and attentive & we were served wiener schnitzel and then the impressive nockerl for dessert. Amazing to think that the restaurant has been around since 803. Could not comment on price bc was part of our tour.

“Mozart Concert & Dinner LOVELY~”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

The building itself is a masterpiece.
The concept here was a performance of Mozart music portrayed by professional musicians and singers.
We had 8:00 reservations and went into the lower level restaurant for a cocktail before we could be seated upstairs.
The dining room was set up so elegantly and slightly formal to reveal the feeling of the era of Mozart.
The food was served in intervals between music and performances.
Costumes were of the period and looked authentic.
The menu was presented before the show began. Each course came at once and was served well. White gloved service.
The food itself was prepared well and tasted good. Chicken was the entree. The dessert was the best part. It was a Cocoa portrait of Mozart on the plate with a small sweet cream semi frido.

“Expected More”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Don't get me wrong - this was a great experience, one both of us enjoyed, but for the price of this dinner only the food and the atmosphere were the stars, the service not so much. We elected to have a dinner in the small restaurant not the touristy Mozart dress up show they do upstairs. The food was spectacular, perhaps one of the best dinners we had on this trip but the service was about as average as steak tartar at Stary Dom in Warsaw. The food took forever and in the end the waiter got our main course order wrong. It was still splendid but not what we ordered. Having said that, the food alone is worth the price of this place and the fact that this might really be the oldest restaurant in Europe only makes this meal even more memorable.

“Refined and delightful Austrian restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014 via mobile

St Peter's is very special: they've been serving food here since 803. There are a series of rooms each with different characters, and best of all on a summer's day, a cool shady courtyard. The service and food are refined, but not up themselves. The prices are quite good for the quality. Recommended.

“Great food at Europe's oldest restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Our Salzburg immersion concludes at the ancient Benedictine abbey of St Peter where Klaus assumes the role of guide and introduces us to the delectable delights of St Peter Stiftskeller, reputed to be the oldest restaurant in Europe, serving weary and wet travellers since 803! There our buoyant, ebullient party of professional conference organisers rest their weary bones, like hundreds of thousands of pilgrims before them, feasting on an amazing, unusual Duet of Char with Radish Foam followed by Veal Tenderloin with White and Green Asparagus, Sauce Hollandaise and Parsley Potatoes. Set in one of the many private rooms of the warren-like venue, our table is magnificently set with care and attention bringing us together in an atmosphere of supreme conviviality and friendship. - See more at: http://padraicino.com/salzburg-much-sound-music/#sthash.bVPQN60T.dpuf
