Owner description: A bus tour of several of the sites seen in the classic film The Sound of Music.
Useful Information: Activities for older children

The tour gave an excellent insight into the Making of the film & The various locations used both in the city & the surrounding countryside.
Peter the guide, conducted the tour with great humour & shared his vast knowledge regarding the film.
It was a superb tour from the moment we were collected from our Hotel, to us dis-embarking at the Mirabell Platz. Highly recommendable & Great value for money.

I dont think Salzburg would be on the map without the "Sound of Music" so enjoy the 4 hour tour (Euro 37) and learn the movie trivia. I think guide was key and we had Peter who was entertaining with his corny jokes and one-liners. As you can see Salzburg old town in half day, this tour is mostly outside city so its a great chance to see sites in the countryside. If you start to get bored, they sell beer on the bus...

We set off promptly, after a nice welcome, and we cheerfully sang along to the soundtrack at first. Unfortunately the guide made a play for her gratuity within the first 5 minutes. She did not always clearly explain what there was to look at or where it was - at one point saying ‘there!’ (presumably she was pointing from her seat at the front), and she made some questionable comments, based on her personal ideas. She repeatedly asked us to ‘guess’ - which was a bit annoying.

The sights we saw were:
*Leopoldskron Palace - seen from across the lake. Lovely. It seems also to be accessible by public bus 21, 22: Firmianstrasse. It is privately owned, so cannot be visited.
*Nonnberg Abbey - we halted briefly on a roundabout to take photos from the coach... You will also see the Abbey (but not on this trip) from elsewhere in Salzburg; for example from Hohensalzburg fortress. If you take the funicular up to the fortress, the walk down is interesting and you can take a short detour and actually visit the Abbey church - while we were inside the nuns were singing their devotions, hidden behind a screen - magic. The real Maria was married here, apparently.
*Glass pavilion - at Hellbrunn Castle (it was originally at Leopoldskron Palace). We only saw the pavilion - nothing of the castle or its fabulous water gardens. Hellbrunn itself is accessible on public bus 25, and is a must-see, so you could see the pavilion at the same time.
*Lovely scenery - for example Untersberg (also accessible on public bus 25), and some lakes and other mountains.
*Mondsee - where the wedding scene was filmed. The inside of the church is stunning. The guide helpfully said that the organ music used in the film was improvised by the organist to get the ‘congregation’ in the mood for filming - the only music not written by Rodgers/Hammerstein.

The guide said she was prepared to explain where the Mirabel Gardens were, so we could visit them on our own after the trip.

We did not see where ‘the hills are alive...’ was filmed, although I think there was a vague nod from the guide about the general direction the location might have been (and looking at the brochure, I now see she was probably wrong).

Mondsee was the location that stood out. Other than that, the trip did not impress.

They conveniently skipped Mirabell gardens, while advertising it in the brochures. Also time spent on the lakes is not sufficient. Too commercial!

It was really not a Sound of Music tour as it did not take us into any of the locations and showed most of them from distances. At the most, it can be called Salzburg tour as we were taken to some nice locations having little relevance to Sound of Music.
It is overpriced in comparison to Salzburg Pass which covered so many places.
