“Friendly staff and excellent service”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

After long drive from Evian,France we finally arrived to Innsbruck and found this great hotel while searching a place to stay.
At the check in we were warmly welcomed. We got a really nice room, especially we like the bathroom.
The staff both in the Bar and the Restaurant were taking care of us like Queen and King.
The dinner was good but to much.
All together this family run 500 years old hotel is a hotel to stay for every visitor who appreciate high class standars.

Our stay at this hotel was at the end of a very long day -- we had flown from Calgary via London to Munich and then rented a car and drove to Innsbruck. So we were a little tired, and only half of our luggage followed us.

Upon arriving, we found out that we had booked a single room and a double room for the four of us. Of course, the single room in Europe means just that -- a single bed in a room. While this was entirely our fault, we were pretty shocked that it cost an extra 90 Euros to upgrade to a room with a double bed. I am assuming it's because the single room was an advance booking rate, and the upgrade was to the full price of the double room. However, we had little choice and paid the upgrade, only to find out that the other room had 3 single beds in it, which would have been fine for the one night along with a single room.

We inquired at the front desk about a place to eat a late dinner, and were told that it would be difficult to find anywhere with space for us, and that the hotel restaurant could squeeze us in. We waited in the bar for a while, but looking at the menu, it seemed like a very high-end restaurant, and since it was already past 9 pm, we decided to try our luck elsewhere. A pizza joint across the street was perfect for us -- and there was plenty of space.

The rooms were charmingly decorated and the bathrooms were nice. Lots of stairs so it was maybe a good thing we only had half of our luggage. Also, it's very centrally located, close to the old town and the tram.

The next day only one of our bags arrived, and the front desk was helpful in letting us use the phone to try to contact British Airways to find out the location of our second bag.

However, there were a couple of other disappointments. We ate at the breakfast buffet, but there was no way to tell which was the 14 euro buffet and which was the 8 euro buffet. All of the food was on one table. i think we each had a bacon strip that made our meals qualify as "hot" buffet. A sign would have been helpful. We were there at the very end of the buffet hour, so the food was not really that fresh any more, but it seems like the variety was quite good.

In addition, we misplaced the parking card. Again, totally our fault. However, when we found it after our trip and mailed it back, we were told that they had purchased another, so we could not be refunded our 25 euros. I can only hope that the next person who loses their card will not have to pay, and that good karma will follow.

So I felt a little poorer after our experience. I understand that it was all our own doing, and we learned some things, but I don't think the value of this hotel withstood the extra 140 paid for unexpected things

Dear guest from Canada,

we thank you very much for your stay in our hotel and the review on this platform. We are happy to hear that you like our rooms and the decoration. We are sorry about the inconveniences, but ensure you that we always do our best to satisfiy our guests.
Regarding the stairs we have to say that we do have an elevator on each floor. Please let our reception team know if you need help with your luggage. Our team is happy to help you. Regarding the breakfast please consider that our breakfast service team always let’s the reception desk know which breakfast the guests had but the team always asks the guests before telling the reception. So normally there are no misunderstandings.
Parking card: we are sorry that we couldn't give you back the € 25.00. We have to pay exactly the € 25.00 to the parking garage owner to get a new card. In January we wrote you a personal message regarding this problem. We are sorry that we cannot give you a more positive answer.
Our whole team is really helpful and nice and always tries to satisfy our guests. We really do appreciate your feedback in order to get better and better every day. We thank you very much for your stay and send nice wishes to Canada!

Kind regards,
Your Schwarzer Adler Team!

Stayed in the Schwarzer Adler for three nights in one of their suites on the fifth floor. As mentioned in earlier review, the location of the hotel is excellent, as I had to be at the MCI for a course there. It is located very close to the centre of the wonderfull city of Innsbruck. Welcome at the reception was friendly, the Tirolean clothes of the staff was a nice touch. Breakfast buffet very much variation and tasteful, friendly and forthcoming staff. I did not use the bar or the spa. My only remark concerns the temperature in the hotel, which I found to be a bit on the warm side, but that is only a small issue. Overall: I can recommend this hotel to anyone. If I revisit Innsbruck, this will be my place to stay.

I would love to have given this hotel 5 stars. But there were too many little things wrong. Firstly I'll start with the positives. We were upgraded to a business suite. Which was lovely room with fabulous views of the alps on the fifth floor. Lovely comfy bed with plenty of pillows. Mini bar was well stocked and fairly priced. The pfiff bar was lovely and had a huge selection of drinks and cocktails. I didn't use the spa but did take a look and it looked lovely. We didn't take breakfast so can't comment. The location is great too five mins walk to the congress station to catch train up to top of nordkette. And five in other direction the the gorgeous old town.
Ok, negatives the bathroom was very small and the bidet was impossible to use as it was so close to radiator. No one to welcome is upon arrival. Reception is on first floor and it's not obvious upon arrival. No help with luggage either. No turn down service. All these little things I have come to expect from 4star superior hotels. And most annoyingly the wardrobe was in lounge area ?? However it is a lovely hotel in an excellent location for exploring gorgeous Innsbruck.

Dear guest,

We thank you very much for your feedback to our hotel. It is a pleasure to hear that you were satisfied with our rooms, the minibar and our hotel bar and that you enjoyed your stay in our lovely city. Our hotel has a 500 year old history and due to that we have to accept the existing construction of the building. We tried to find the most comfortable solution for our guests when renovating in 2000 and 2002 and got a lot of excellent feedback for the unique design. We are sorry that you didn't feel welcome! Our reception team is the friendliest one and does everything for our guests to feel comfortable unless they are on the 1st floor and cannot be directly at the entrance for welcoming. We hope for your understanding and thank you very much for your feedback.

Kind regards,
Your Schwarzer Adler team!

We didn't stay at this hotel but had a most delicious meal here as part of a tour group.
It was served downstairs in a section which is over 500 years old if I remember rightly.
The service and staff were excellent. So was the atmosphere.
I don't know if the restaurant had an actual name.

Dear Zahle,

We thank you very much for the evaluation and are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay in our Schwarzer Adler Restaurant so much. Thank you for the positive feedback regarding our staff and the service - we really do appreciate it.

You are right: the section downstairs is a special vaulted cellar - 500 years old! The atmosphere is really unique there!
Thanks again for sharing your experiences on this platform. Hopefully we can welcome you again here in Innsbruck.

We had a pleasure of staying at this hotel on 03-04/01/2014. We were provided with a very nice room with an extra bed for our 8-years old kid. Th hotel fully meets the requirements of a 4-star hotel: it's clean, comfortable? with polite personnel and the location's very convenient as well. The value for money is great! We will most likely stay there again if and when we happen to be in Innsbruck.

I stayed in this hotel from December 30th 2013 to January 3rd 2014. We were three couples with children, occupying the rooms numbers 209, 409 and 508. Our experience has been completely negative and we will never come back again.

Here are some of the problems we had:

1. The room n. 209 had the heating broken and they never fixed it, nor changed us the room. Notice that in that room there was a 9 months old child sleeping with the parents, who obviously got ill. The room was freezing. We complaint every day but nothing happened. The last day, when we paid the bill, we underlined the bad service we received. The answer was: “we sent a plumber the second day, but the room was occupied and he went away”; so, for them, sending one single time a plumber, who did not identified himself as a plumber (we thought it was the normal room service) was enough and they did not care that the problem was not solved. Of course, the plumber did not come ever again. Moreover, they offered us a discount of 10% only on the first night, because on the second day they sent the plumber!

2. The front desk is useless. Every question we asked, the answer was always the same: “I don’t know, I have to check on the Internet” (and the Internet is veeeery slow!). We were asking were to park around the Hotel or if there were trains to Strasbourg, not strange questions!

3. They tried to bill breakfast (which is not included in the booking, 14 € per person per day) also on the room 209 who did not asked for it.

4. Even though we were three couples with queen beds, all the beds had two single duvets! I had never seen such a thing.

5. The wellness center is really tiny.

The only positive thing of this hotel is the position, very near to the center, but after our experience I strongly not recommend it and we will never go back again!

Dear Angelavia,

we thank you very much for your feedback to our hotel and are sorry to hear that you didn’t feel that comfortable during your stay.
As every feedback from our guests is important for us, we would like to comment on your concerns:

Due to fact that heating was broken on the day of check-in, our reception team immediately put a radiant heater in the room. At the same day the reception sent a plumber to fix it and also on the day of the check-out the room was warm and the heating was working. Normally we do change the room in such a case, but as it was the New Years’ season, the whole hotel was fully booked. Please apologize for that.

We never had a complaint regarding our reception team and are surprised to hear that. We are sorry that you didn’t feel well attended at our reception. Our reception team is helpful and nice, speaks different languages in order to perfectly take care of our guests.

We are sorry for the mistake regarding the breakfast. It was our fault and we really do apologize for that.

In Austria it is standard to have two single duvets, even in double beds. It is more comfortable and our guests really appreciate this service.

The wellness area is fine and cozy, equipped with a sauna, steam bath, a whirlpool, showers and solarium. Also a romantic relaxation area and Kneipp water-treading basin is waiting for you. Our team does not communicate that we have a big wellness center, neither in our offers nor on the website, but it is nicely designed by Swarovski.

We really do care for our guests - that is of highest importance for us. We are sorry to hear that you didn’t feel the same and of course we respect your decision.
Kind regards,
Your Schwarzer Adler team!
