“Nice shopping/dining area between St. Stephens and the State Opera”
Reviewed 18 March 2013

Most will eventually spend time in or along Kärntner Straße (kaernterstrasse), which is both a tourist friendly street for visitors as well as a functional and famous shopping street in Central Vienna. Kaerntnerstrasse runs south of Stephensplatz and St. Stephens church, linking this area to the State Opera and eventually the Karlsplatz area and is a pedestrian friendly way.

There is plenty of shopping for international fashion and clothing brands as well as souvenirs along much of Kaerntnerstrasse. A good shopping mall, called the Ringstrassen-Galerien, which can be accessed near the State Opera House is a good option if the weather is unfavourable outside.

You can also find quite a few konditorei, cafe and a few bar options along Kaerntnerstrasse with indoor and alfresco dining areas. These include institutional names like Gertsner, L.Heiner and Hotel Sacher. You can also find fast food, franchise coffee shops, street vending kiosks and other quick bites as well while in this area.

Overall, we feel Kaerntnerstrasse window shopping is nice in this area and that it can be enjoyably lively here, similar to nearby Graben Street. It might seem busy at certain times of the day but its nothing like Asian cities in terms of crowds so its fine in our view. However, we've not been too impressed with the dining along this area, having enjoyed our restaurant and konditorei experiences much better in other ares of the city center.

“Shopping street”
Reviewed 5 January 2013

If you want to do some shopping, this is the place to start. Not the very top brands, something for the everyday man.

“Window shopping”
Reviewed 4 January 2013

There were a lot of the same stores as we have in Zurich, so the only thing that interested our kids was the souvenier shops. They were tiny and crowded, so look for times of day when it is less busy.

“Be ready for the crowds.”
Reviewed 13 October 2012

A bit misleading for me to state that it's "very good". That's a relative term. I'm not a shopper, but it's the place to go to gawk in the windows.

“Typical Shopping Street”
Reviewed 9 October 2012

If shopping is your thing then you will probably enjoy strolling along the pedestrian only zone of Kaertnerstrasse in Vienna. It has lots of department stores and the usual specialty stores as well as the tourist souvenir shops. There are also plenty of places to eat, but at the usual inflated tourist prices. Better off getting off the beaten track and getting better quality food for a lower price.
