Owner description: One of the city's most popular shopping streets.

I went to these shopping area on the way to see the St Stephen Cathedral. The long avenue starts from the end of Karlsplatz up to St Stephens Cathedral. The whole area is full of high end european brands and there was even two large Swarovski stores a few metres from each other along the same side of the street.

During the months of late November to December during the yuletide season the area lights up with twinkling lights and decors from the various stores.Despite the cold weather there were a lot of tour groups and pedestrians shopping.

This was the quintessential shopping street of the city: extremely wide pedestrian walkways, big-name shops, souvenir shops, etc. I indulged in a few treats at Swarovski, at their larger flagship store, and the fantastic Manner (chocolate wafers, etc) store at the beginning of the street near the metro station. As luck would have it, I was in time to take major advantage of a sale on their incredible chocolate wafers - a true Austrian masterpiece! However, as at least one reviewer commented: please watch your handbags AND bags of purchase - roving packs of thieves and pickpockets were in force (and in a greater number than shoppers; we visited in October, and on a very nice day). My poor husband was actually encircled several times as he patiently waited for me outside stores, and just carrying an ordinary shopping bag! He felt it was necessary to place my (small) Swarovski bag on the bottom of this bag to deter more attention. I didn't expect this activity on this type of street - clearly designed to attract tourists and natives - as bad as any large or well-known train station! Apparently the police don't think it's worth their time to have an obvious profile, as compared to say, Florence, Italy. What a pity for their tourist industry.

On of two biggest shopping streets, offers every thing you want: shops, cafes, restaurants, banks, hotels, street artists, souvenir shops. Alway crowded with tourists, atmosphere there is just amazing. I would suggest to explore tinny streets around this main street.

Kaerntner Strasse - from St Stephens Cathedral (hold your pocketbook close to you)... to the Opera - this is a touristy, yet fun place to enjoy in a leisurely way. One of the highlights for me was the Swarowsky store where they often have sales. I've bought presents here that cost less than half of what I would have paid in the Boca Raton mall store! My husband enjoyed sitting outside and people-watching while I explored some of the stores. It is a great place to walk on a summer evening when it s a bit cooler and lovely when lighted. If you are near the Opera House, walk into the subway station for a few good chuckles (I won't give it away!).

Kaerntnerstrasse has very good shopping with a variety of shops and not all of them are expensive. There are also many eating places here so one can sit down and refresh oneself between shopping.
