Owner description: EXPERIENCE HUNDERTWASSER UP CLOSE: Art - Achitecture - Nature - Vision Two intriguing museums experiences await the visitors at the KUNST HAUS WIEN. The Museum Hundertwasser presents the world's biggest collection of Austrian exceptional artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 -2000): his world famous paintings, fine art prints, tapestries and architectural designs. Here you can immerse yourself in his imaginative world of art inside and out - colorful walls and uneven floors in the interior, the artistic façade with tiles and color fields on the outside. "Tree tenants" grow from the windows, plants and flowers inhabit the rooftop and inner courtyard. In Vienna's first "green museum" one can sense Hundertwasser's visionary mind and experience his ecological engagement on site. Beyond that the KUNST HAUS WIEN is Vienna's premier house for photography exhibitions: changing exhibitions introduce the biggest names of photography to a wide audience.

We enjoyed our visit to the Kunsthaus ("Art House"). Our daughter is in the process of creating one herself with recycled materials, and has gotten us hooked in visiting various "outsider art" type homes and constructions.

The museum was colorful and interesting, the art a little "out there", but the Japanese block prints were jaw dropping. They practically leapt off the walls.

The museum's Tian cafe food was delicious, the setting nice, and the prices were reasonable.

We walked down the street to visit the Hundertwasser Haus, an apartment/shops block designed by the same artist. Dreadful experience. Would not recommend that part to anyone. Biggest tourist trap we've seen in a loooong time.

A fascinating building with many features of the life of Hundertwasse. He was into many more ideas and creations than I had heard of before. Planting a tree is a great idea, not a Mausoleum. Beautiful designs and lithographs. The books available also give much to look at of his work.

If like the alternative then the Kunsthaus Wien is the must see in Vienna. It is the entire package, from the house and it's unusual architecture and decoration, Hundertwasser's artwork and architectural philosophy, and temporary exhibition of art and the shoe. The delicious food in the cafe completed the visit.

So many great museums in Vienna - so little time. But you should make time for this quirky testament to the creative vision of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, one of the most boldly original yet accessible artists of the latter 20th century - a bridge between Klimt and, say, Keith Haring. It's just outside the old city, about a 15 minute walk from the Landstrasse U-Bahn station.

A bit hard to get to,but with the help of locals we got there by tram n 0, then n.1 that stops close. There are cute little shops, cafes, restaurant.Really interesting, quirky place to visit, but the house itself has apartments so you cannot enter the building.
