When booking a room here, my friend and I explained we would need a cot in addition to the two single beds, as we would be visited by a friend. Luckily for us that friend didn't make it, as the room was so small we could hardly walk around the beds without banging into something. No idea where a cot would have fit.

That being said, the hotel was charming and well located. Breakfast was lovely. And despite having already checked out, when British Airways called me there to notify me that my long lost luggage was found, and I happened to walk past, someone at reception noticed me miraculously and ran out to give me the message.

An alright place to stay.

The 3 best things about this hotel were: the included breakfast, the breakfast servers--very cheerful and helpful--and the location of the hotel.

However, the rude and inflexible receptionist when we checked in will remain lodged in our minds a long time. There are hotel policies that are not posted and not explained before you book or check in. The first one we "breached"--we invited our son, traveling with us & staying in a hostel close by, to come up to our room to play cards and have a drink. The receptionist read him the riot act when he passed by her desk, and when he'd had enough, he got on the elevator, came and told us what happened. My husband went down to "clear things up." However, he was treated as a criminal, suspected of disobeying "the law. "

When he spoke to the mgr the next day, she'd already had an earful (her words) from her employee; she stood by the hotel policy, saying they couldn't have anyone except paying hotel customers in the rooms. We've never heard of this, or been treated so badly with no explanation prior . . . there are much better ways to handle this. Why not have a guest sign in at reception, and be told he has to sign out by 11:00 or his host will be charged for his stay?

From then on it was impossible to get ice (we were grudgingly given 6 cubes at a time, had to go down to the kitchen to get it, and were told in no uncertain terms NOT to enter the kitchen). When we asked for glasses, we were curtly told we had glasses in the room. Yeah, well, they were slightly bigger than thimbles, not as big as a little juice glass! There are more details & nuances--too long to write here.

We are seasoned travelers--we know ice isn't on the top of the list for Europeans--but we've not had a problem in most hotels--and if we have, we've certainly been able to buy it reasonably.

Suffice it to say our stay was very uncomfortable. The rooms are tiny, hot, and the TVs are not as advertised. Ours was a 12" screen, and the first night received no channels whatsoever. The furniture has sharp corners; you can't turn around without bumping into a door, sink, chair or something. Both my husband and I checked out with bruises on our legs and arms, just from getting dressed, showering, and packing. Oh, yes, and it's loud--lots of street noise.

This is not the place for a good memory of Vienna.

The hotel is close to the opera and parking slots can be found in nearby garages. The house is an old building with beautiful ornaments garnishing it. The rooms are well spaced, clean and quite at night, the bathroom is functional and well hygienic. Staff is very helpful and friendly, breakfast offered a rich buffet to choose from. The pricing for the quality offered and the location is well reasoned. It was a very good experience.

Room Tip: Our room was on the third floor facing the street.

We've stayed at the Hotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper every April while we attend a meeting in Vienna. We are never disappointed. Yes, rooms are small and bathrooms even smaller, but the positives outweigh these minor issues. Who spends time in the room anyway when you're in Vienna? We love the warm greetings and helpfulness of the staff and so enjoy the friendliness of the breakfast ladies, especially Zivka, who always has a hug for us. Breakfasts, by the way, are more than ample and a couple of latte machiatos get us on our way daily. The location can't be beat: so close to the opera, Karntnerstrasse the pedestrian mall and main shopping street, lots of cafes and restaurants nearby. A classic Viennese small, intimate hotel but best to visit when you can keep windows closed since street noise at bar closing can be loud.

Room Tip: All the double rooms face the street.

You can forgive the small rooms and bathrooms as the hotel staff and the aesthetic aspects of the hotel more than compensate. The location cannot be bettered - quite perfect for those of us who like to explore 'au pied'. The large screen outside the Staatsoper showing the live performance of Swan Lake was a treat, as were the Easter markets .... once we found them!
Apart from the obviously stunning architecture (every building a huge 'wedding cake') try not to miss The Demel cake shop and the Griechenbeist historic Viennese inn, where artists and musicians congregated in years gone by. If you love music, art and architecture, this is the place - and the accommodation - for you.

Room Tip: Try to secure one of the "middle" rooms on the 2nd or 3rd floor.

The room is really old and the bed are very bad ( too soft). The bathroom is very little, you can do nothing inside. The breakfast is good. the location is very good. The price is only for the location. This hotel worth 2 stars not more. You don t have climatisation in the room.
