They do about 3 tours a day in different languages in the afternoon. English tours were at 1,2 and 3pm. Turn up half hour before to queue for tickets. Interesting tour that takes you back stage and into the main theatre area. Beautiful building with some original parts and some renewed after the war. Cost 9euros each to get in.

The Vienna Opera is one of three opera houses in the world (with New York City and Santa Fe) with individual subtitle screens with selectable languages. opened in 1869.
walking steps from karlsplatz which again is one of the oldest subway stations and its beautiful it self.. cross the road and bingo u are standing infront of opera house.
i find tickets to be expensive but hey, its worth it.
one adult is 199 euros, pricey? :)

Vienna is such a wonderful city, and a visit to the Vienna State Opera House should not be missed, if at all possible. We booked months in advance, and paid 90 Euros each for good seats in the upper circle to see Tosca. For this, you get a good view and a screen that translates what is sung into your own language. Great idea! However, if you get there early enough, you can queue and buy cheap tickets and stand at the back of each layer of seats. So, standing for 3 hours (with two intervals), and no screen, but you are witnessing a fantastic opera company in one of the great opera houses in the world. Well worth either the money or the inconvenience to gain this unforgettable experience. The building is magnificent, incredibly ornate and impressive, and a real treat was to walk out on to the balcony at each interval, where you can join the queue for glasses of champagne and/or just enjoy the air and the view. Like many other places in Vienna, no air conditioning, strangely, so don't over dress. Honestly? I would recommend an evening at this opera house for anyone and everyone, either seated expensively or standing cheaply!

It is a spectacular place with lots of tourists, atmosphere is great and staff is friendly. However, they have a dress code, so bear this in mind.
