Owner description: The 'Hundertwasser Village' was designed by famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1991. It is located opposite 'Hundertwasserhaus' and shows his ideas of interior design. The house had been used by a car tyre company before and was completely redesigned by Hundertwasser.Hundertwasser at the opening: 'With the Village for my friend Kalke I was acting as a doctor for architecture: Don't demolish and rebuild but use existing building fabric and improve it by changing or adding to the building and inserting components with new forms and colours.'Hundertwasser Village is one of the most visited sightseeing places in Vienna and open for visitors all year. Entrance is free.

The Village is the usual agglomeration of souvenir shops with few wares of any value. Disappointingly, it has little to do with Hundertwasser. While seeing the Hundertwasser house was thrilling, the Village is a commercial trap. In one instance, the shopkeeper couldn't be bothered to discuss shipping to the U.S. of a 200 euro lamp, not even proper packaging so that it would be safe.... The young man clearly had no interest in selling it to me. I told him, that he apparently didn't care whether he made a sale or not. Of course, he was not the owner, so indeed he had no interest in pleasing customers. A Russian woman in another store, on the other hand, went out of her way to show us her merchandise, some of which was really nice and not overpriced.

Funny and peculiar playground of an eccentric artist. Lovely to see how well it fits in the surrounding bourgeois blocks.

A short walk from the Old Town passing through funneling irregular streets, reveals the most beautiful piece of art I’ve ever seen, and possibly my favorite building in Vienna – Hundertwasser Haus. This eclectic-style building combining the elements of a Moorish mosque with features of Spanish villages and Venetian palaces, is originally a municipal apartment block created in 1985 by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. There was an undeniably upbeat feel about the whole place as you enter through the main entrance on Lowengasse into the similarly eclectic-styled rows of shops residing in the building itself.

This is totally different and inspired. I loved the man as a part of nature concept. There is a little aspect of Gaudi in the tiles, but the nature element is strong. It is worth paying eighty euros to use the bathroom just to see his take on bathrooms with rolling floors and walls. Check this out! Totally different than other buildings in Vienna.
