We spent a week in the Grand Hotel. Staff are a high point, friendly and very willing to help generally; amongst the best we've experienced.

We had a deluxe room. This was well equipped with quality fittings and a nice marble bathroom with double sinks and a heated wall mirror. The air-conditioning was exceptionally noisy, made slightly better after we complained about it but still far too intrusive for a 5 star hotel. The aircon also went through up and down cycles, failing to start and then making crashing noises like a piano falling down stairs. Probably load shedding of the crudest kind. Why is it that it is always the customer who has to tell the hotel management about these things? A simple check between hirings with a sound level meter would soon identify where work is needed. Opening the window for air was not an option, as our room faced the Ringstrasse which runs 24 hours with buses, trams and people loudly enjoying themselves and several other people. Sound isolation with the window closed was excellent, virtually silent.

Wardrobes are unusually spacious and well thought out for storage of stuff, the two armchairs are really comfortable, and there are sensible coat hooks beside the door. Bed mattress was tired with squeaking springs, not the quality one expects these days and although a king size, is equipped with individual duvets. Bathroom is good, ample hot water, decent towels, and a 24 hour towel rail but the energy saving lighting played up; time to move this old technology over to LEDS folks; the toilet was as dark as Hades until the bulb warmed up. Anyone with a disability might find the combined bath/shower very hard to get safely in and out of, with a wide lip and restricted space. Room handbook mentions smart phones to control the room but not in ours - we had basic phones which we eventually unplugged owing to LCD displays as bright as a supernova at night. TV small with only one non-news English language channel - this is most unusual and pretty cheap; surely a sub to Discovery, BBC Worldwide and History Channel is affordable?

Wireless internet was old fashioned, with a free service that was slow and logged out the user continuously. The paid internet service is unreasonably expensive; the local cafes mostly offer fast, free internet so why not the Grand? The room had Ethernet ports but they weren't connected; much preferable to the insecure wireless that Google refused to connect to, and my bank locked my account after fruitless attempts at access.

Housekeeping was fine in the morning (apart from the maid hammering on the door at 0830 on a Saturday to make up the room???). Evening turn down service was erratic and poorly timed; we gave up on it towards the end of the week. Cleanliness was good in the bathroom but so-so in the room; less obvious debris never got picked up and a sticky spot on the carpet by the bed was there all week. The safe is too small for a laptop (only just got an iPad in).

Laundry service good and reasonably priced. In-room breakfast was excellent, with quality ingredients and prompt, polite service. They need to ditch teabags though, this is a five star hotel; we expect a teapot and loose tea please. The Grand Cafe (coffee shop) has a good value buffet menu, choice is OK but not special, and we had some confused service there. The Rose Garden cafe is OK for cocktails, the pianist is mediocre and ambience non-existent both there and in the Grand Cafe, not helped by the direct connection to the mall next door.

The Unkai Japanese restaurant is, simply, superb but be prepared for an eye watering bill. Worth it in our opinion but it's always subjective.

Overall, a good hotel that needs some upgrading, and a better eye to detail by the management. Location on the Ring is just perfect, however and this makes up for some of the deficiencies mentioned here. Staff friendliness and willingness to help, with prompt and efficient service when they do, is a real plus and pretty rare these days.

Room Tip: If you don't want the view an inside room will be cheaper and quieter. Check out the aircon noise before accepting the room.

Having had the good fortune of staying in many wonderful hotels in Europe, this ranks right near the top. The staff is wonderful, very accommodating and friendly. Marcus the Concierge was extremely helpful arraigning a number of excursions and dinners for us. This is old world European Luxury, very nice rooms, great public spaces, very ornate and beautiful. To appreciate the beauty of Europe, I highly recommend Grand Hotels and this is one of them. We will be here for four nights.

The hotel has a great location and is nicely renovated. A good place to stay for sightseeings in the city center. However watch out for a doorman of arabic descent (the others are fine).
First of all, the taxies that he arranges always turn out to be twice as expensive as regular taxis "off the street". We tested it several times. A kick-back scheme is certainly involved. Secondly, one day I left my iphone in a cab picked up at the Grand. When we asked this doorman to help recover the phone, he igored us and finally said that he does not have a clue how to find a driver. We suggested then that we ask police to be involved as there was a camera at the entrance and the car could easily be identified. In 5 minutes (!) the phone was delivered to our room. It is a pity that this nice hotel hires such terrible staff!

Room Tip: watchout for a conman at the door

We spent 5 wonderful nights at this hotel. If you are staying in Vienna stay at one of the grand hotels. The grand hotels give you a true sense on Viennese living. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The staff could not be any nicer. They were quick to please and alway friendly. Free internet access is included. Location was perfect. A block away from the Opera and the tram is just outside the door. Can't wait to go back to Vienna and stay at this jewel of a hotel.
