The hotel is situated on one of Vienna's main 'normal' (i.e. not touristic and not high end) shopping streets the Mariahilfer Strasse. Very conveniently, there is a metro station just a few metres from the hotel but it is also a fairly pleasant 20 minute walk to the main centre. The increasingly trendy neighbourhood also has quite a few good bars and restaurants and the Naschmarkt is nearby. The hotel itself is comfortable. When I arrived, my room was like walking in to an oven but the evening receptionist, armed with a spanner, came and switched off the radiator. Breakfast was ok but nothing special. Price/quality, the hotel is a good deal but if your main focus is the historical centre of Vienna and if you are there for only a weekend (we were there for 10 days), you might wish to choose somewhere more central.

Stayed one evening at the Hotel Kummer in Vienna, Austria, and overall I can say this is a nice hotel. Not great, not horrible. Originally had booked a deluxe room but decided to upgrade to a Junior Suite (240 Euro / night), which was very large for European standards - price is high but you get a lot of space.

The Junior Suite included an entry hallway with a small powder room, a sitting / living room with a flat screen TV, a bedroom with a king bed (two twins pushed together) and a large bathroom with shower / tub. The bathroom had two robes, cotton wipes (?!) an ample supply of shampoos and lotions, hairdryer and (oddly enough) a scale. There was a separate wardrobe area with lots of shelves and a closet. There is a lot of room in these suites. I was in 219 and my friend was in 119 - the rooms were basically the same with the exception that his A/C worked and mine did not. When we inquired about it, the explanation was what the air was not turned on yet anywhere in the building because it was early in the season (even though it worked in my friend's room). There are giant windows and very high ceilings, so with the windows open it cooled down, but there was a lot of noise from the street.

As for the location, it's directly across the street from a Metro stop, which is very convenient if you are coming in on the train (we came into Simmering on the train from Prague and it was a quick trip on the U3 to get over to the Neubau stop in front of the hotel). If you are coming into Westbahnhof it's even closer - just a few stops. The street has a lot of stores and there was massive foot and car traffic - it's a busy area so if you want quiet, look elsewhere.

The room had a LAN internet wire which didn't work when I arrived but suddenly worked later in the day. There is also wireless, but if you're above the first floor that doesn't work either. The charge for 24 hours of internet was 27 Euro.

The hotel is small, so there's a bar and not much else. It has a vintage feel and is very clean. It's fair to rate it as a 4**** hotel but it would need a lot to make it to 5.

Staff were polite and tried to help with the air conditioning situation, but weren't overly accommodating with anything in particular.

We stayed in here for 1 night for my birthday and was sufficient. Trust me that we know how 2* star hotel look and how 4* also look and this one is a 2* hotel placed at the middle of Maria Hilferstrasse. The position is great, but the hotel is 2* in terms of room and breakfast. Room was large but very old and dusty, sheets looked to be cleaned but had some ODD SPOTS on them!! Breakfast was quite ok but poor. Hotel has no parking but it's a private one just next, 20 euros/day. So it depends what you are looking for. If you put accent on being in the heart of Vienna, this is the place, but don't ask for more than this!

I spend 4 nights at Kummer hotel and it was not such a bad choice!
The room was big ( I booked a superior room ) but very noisy and with a small and old TV! For a superior room, the bathroom was incredible small and old, no bathtub, only a shower - should be renovated , urgent!
Also, no vacuum cleaner and no changing the sheets for a 4 nights!
The hotel has a very small hall and a very small restaurant, too small for a 4 stars hotel!
Good points: brakfast, staff and location!

We just got back from what was close to being a perfect weekend trip to Vienna. it helps that it's still possible to fly across Europe for a song.

We stayed at the Kummer Hotel, which is located right at the Neubaugasse U-bahn stop on Mariahilfestrasse. This location suited us. We had easy access to Vienna's main shopping street, the restaurants and bars in the area, the English movie theatre (Haydn Kino), grocery store, and more. We didn't want to be in a dead quiet downtown tourist area.

Just a few minutes on the subway and we were at the Stephanplatz (the centre of the city) or at the Christkindlmarkt in front of the city hall. When you step out of the hotel you're immediately in all the action - and yet you hear none of it when you're in the hotel room.

The building itself has historical charm but is modern where it counts. We enjoyed taking the stairs because of the grand staircase. (But there is a lift too.) Really, it's exactly the kind of hotel you want to stay in when you go to Vienna. It is part of a chain called Austria Hotels International, but it didn't feel like a chain hotel. Looking at the plan of the hotel, we could see that the rooms were all different.

An attractive feature of this hotel is its affordability (in November at least). When we booked, we were offered the option of paying just a little extra for a deluxe room. We really enjoyed the spacious room that we got.

The bathroom was modern and stocked with Fusion soap. The shower was good. The room had a modern flatscreen TV, but it had just CNN, Bloomberg and one English movie channel (MGM, I think). No BBC. No BVN or other Dutch-language stations.

This hotel didn't have an internet station or a wellness area or anything like that. It had a small bar. The entrance and reception area is nice, but it's a little small. The bar is off to one side of the reception area and on the way to the breakfast room. This means you can smell tobacco in the reception area and on your way to breakfast. But this was a problem for us throughout Vienna. This is the land that time forgot: fur coats, cafés with whipped cream and ultra-sugary desserts, and smoking. You'd expect nothing less of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The buffet breakfast was close to luxurious. Classy presentation. Good service. Prosciutto ham, salmon, yoghurt, fresh fruit, bacon, scrambled and boiled eggs, and more. However, the coffee was far too strong for our taste.

The Tripadvisor rating system is sometimes difficult to apply. This is not a five-star hotel, but the TA rating system asks you to rate your overall experience, not second guess the hotel's star rating. It is probably a three or four star, but I'm rating the experience as higher than that.

We booked our accommodation through the local Vienna Tourist Office. Fortunately, they faxed our accommodation receipt through to us as the hotel reception staff when we checked in had no details of our booking or the price we had been quoted. In fact the reception staff who did not realise that I spoke German discussed the discounted price the tourist office quoted us at length and with disgust.
The rooms were comfortable and clean but very dated. We would certainly would not want to pay full price. The bathrooms are in need of renovation also.
We found the attitude and manner of the staff very elitist and extremely disappointing. They should not assume that their English speaking guests don't understand and speak German!

Although check in is at 2pm, we arrive 7am and they gave us our room immediately which was a very big help - if not they have a luggage room.

Excellently located on the main shopping street right next door to the Uban (we thought this was the most perfect location). Easy to get to from the airport.

Superior Room booked through Expedia was very spacious.

Airconditioning in room (have read previous reviews that there wasn't but they have added this now).

Bathroom looked new - powershower, clean, modern white look.

furniture and decor not our personal taste (we like modern) but that is a taste thing and if you like classical style furniture you will like it.

The staff behind the desk were incredibly polite, friendly and helpful.

15 minutes to walk to St Stephens catherdral and Museum Quarter is a ten minute walk down the shopping street.
