“A good value. Good bar. Horrible room.”
Reviewed 14 June 2010

Hotel Fuerst Metternich was a bit of a disappointment. We booked the hotel because we were impressed by the exterior and heard that the bar was lively. First off, there isn't much of a lobby and was unimpressed by the general decor of the hotel. It seemed as if the place has seen better days.

We were willing to overlook this until we got to our room. Honestly, it looked like a half of a step above a Motel 6. The bed was uncomfortable, the overhead lighting was unflattering, and the view was of a light shaft. In the bathroom, the shower nozzle was in the middle of the tub so whenever you turned on the shower, water sprayed everywhere. Our sink was clogged when we got there. They fixed it after we told them twice.

The saving grace of the hotel was the bar, Barfly. It was quite fun and had an astonishing variety of whiskeys and rum. A bit smokey but the crowd was friendly. If you like shopping (which we don't), then the location would be ideal for you. The hotel is located in the heart of the shopping district.

Having said that, we wouldn't recommend the hotel to others. Yes, it's a budget hotel. But I think you could find a better place in beautiful Vienna to stay with the same price.

The facade of the hotel is poorly maintained. The rooms are good sized and the bathrooms are excellent. We paid 100 euros a night, but by the same price, situated about 50 meters up the street, is the NH Atterseehaus Hotel. The only advantage of this hotel over this last one is the free wifi internet connection, limited to two hours daily. There was not available lift to the floor of our room, and nobody to help us with our luggages. I complained about the heater that was not working and the guy who attended me did nothing about it: it was a cold night because the only blanket available for each of us was very small in width (a double bed with two narrow blankets). We just stayed for one night and then moved to the NH Atterseehaus Hotel.

My friend and I had a double room that had one double bed and a twin bed. The room was surprisingly large, with a good-sized shower/tub. It was plain, clean, and comfortable. The reception was friendly. They gave me extra blankets when I thought our window was broken (it wasn't-- windows there often open from the top, duh).

There is one computer in the reception area that you can use free for Internet; otherwise there is an Internet cafe a block or two away. They have one tiny little elevator. The hotel is in a good location, on a quiet side street off a main strip. There is a supermarket next door.

Breakfast was good, with a selection of breads, cheese, little spreadable pates, hard boiled eggs, cereal, an instant coffee machine, tea bags, and juice. Limited fruit.

All of the big chain store shopping (H&M, etc.) is in that neighborhood and in walking distance. The metro stop is a block or two away, and it is about four stops to the Hofsburg palace complex and the upscale downtown shopping district. Convenient location.

The location of this hotel is really good. It is a short walk to the museum quarter, very close to several metro stops, and in the middle of the shopping area. The free computer in the lobby with internet was a great bonus. The breakfast was sufficient and the staff was helpful in locating any number of sites and giving tips on where to go.

Stayed for three nights 6th - 9th December for a short winter break. The hotel is in a good location if you use the Vienna Underground which is clean, cheap (about the only thing that is in Vienna) and effecient. The Hotel Receptionists and cleaning staff were nice and helpful and our room - 402 was quiet and a good size, especially the bathroom that appeared to be newly decorated. Breakfast was fine and overall I would reccomend this hotel to anyone wanting a fair priced hotel in Vienna. It is exactly the type of hotel we like when visiting European cities, as we find the modern chains the same whatever country you are in. Hotels like Fuerst Mettenich have character.

The metro (underground) was the most effiecient I have encountered, and we used it a great deal, and the most we had to wait for a train was 4 minutes! Britain can learn a lot from the Austrian transport system!! Even the local trains (not the CAT) to and from the airport was on time, clean and well priced.

We stayed for 2 days in Feb 2009, at this hotel in Vienna.
Very good location, near the Mariahilfer, at a very reasonable price. The stuff was friendly, helpful and empathic. At night, an American bar opens at ground floor.
The only thing that could lower the notes is the breakfast (basic).
