Taking a private Viennese Waltz lesson at Elmayer was one of the highlights of my trip. My instructor was a young man maybe 20 years of age who'd been dancing for 5 years. He was a great instructor. I was impressed with his level of professionalism and his manners were top notch. The hour started with learning the basic steps of an American Waltz and as I caught on we moved on to the very fast, sometimes dizzying Viennese Waltz but wow was it fun twirling around the room. If I'd had a flowing skirt and the proper shoes it would have heightened the experience. I couldn't possibly leave Vienna without taking a Viennese Waltz lesson and Elmayer Dance School far exceeded my expectations. Bravo!

I had some time to kill in Vienna. What to do - why learn the Viennese waltz, of course! Luckily I was able to sign up on short notice for a private lesson at Elmayer Dance School. I was nicely welcomed when I arrived and immediately introduced to my teacher, in business attire with dancing shoes. He was a lovely, tall man, though self deprecating. He spoke excellent english with a British and Austrian accent. We wound our way through classes of beautiful young Austrians learning an entrance for their graduation and senior citizens learning something complicated... He was a very patient teacher and even when I gave him the opportunity to make fun of me or my dancing, he never did, only ever himself - which is not to say that he EVER missed a step or a beat, but gave us a chance to laugh.

I am a complete novice to partner dance and waltz. We started slowly with an English waltz and added slow turns, focusing on form and feet and over the course of an hour moved up to the faster pace, dizzying swirl of the Viennese waltz. Not for a minute did I truly think I was ready to audition for So You Think You Can Dance, but got enough that I can pretend! What a fun hour with a charming young dancer. This would also be alot of fun with a group. It is a serious school - so any person at any dance level could gain something here! And you will get dizzy - but there are tools for that. My teacher was patient, professional, but warm. I highly recommend the experience! At the end I was presented with a full colour book, produced by the school, with steps for lots of dances and a CD to practice. Now if only I had the ball gown...
