Renaissance Wien Hotel
Ranked #66 of 359 Hotels in Vienna
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 7 February 2009

Had a business trip to Graz that allowed 3-nights in Vienna for touring and work with colleagues. The Renaissance was chosen as a competent brand with an affordable room rate.

The room was fine, non-smoking with two double beds, an upholstered chair and a typical shallow desk and chair. The desk had only one power outlet near by. The staff are friendly and helpful. Overall, nothing especially noteworthy about the room and most of the facilities, competent pretty much describes it for me.

The hotel has wireless Internet service that's available for an extra fee. During my weekday stay, the service became extremely slow, with connectivity starting with Good signal and Good speed and deteriorating to Fair (sometimes Poor) signal and 1Mbps (or worse) speed. Sometimes it would work well, sometimes pages just wouldn't load. Magically on Friday afternoon, signal quality pretty much stayed Good all of the time and transfer speeds stayed around 11Mbps. My conclusion is that the wireless bandwidth is massively oversubscribed. A wired connection is *not* an available option. If you need a reliable connection that can't handle frequent resetting, I'd choose someplace else.

My home is in North America, where significantly fewer people smoke (in my experience). And most of the restaurants (and, indeed, most entire buildings) I frequent are non-smoking. This made many restaurant experiences in Austria (Europe, in general) sometimes challenging. A plus for the Renaissance is that they have a dining room that is non-smoking. The cooking was competent and it was a much needed break after 5 days of eating smoke with every lunch and dinner. I hated the way I'd smell after leaving a restaurant.

As mentioned by others, the hotel is relatively close to downtown by underground public transit. The hotel can sell you a 72-hour transit pass that will help you get downtown and back as well as offering some discounts for tours, cafes, and some shopping. Also, the hotel is quite close by transit to the Meidling Wein intercity train stop. The Graz train stops there, it's about 1km south of the hotel and may be walkable by some.

The hotel will also sell you a tour package, including a driving tour of downtown and a tour of the nearby Schoenbrunn palace. A shuttle picks up from a number of hotels and takes you downtown for a drive around the highspots. Then it brings you all the way back past the hotel for a decent tour of the Schoenbrunn palace. If desired, it will take you back downtown to the Opera House. We ended up walking back to the hotel from the palace (had work to do). If I were to do this again, I'd probably walk to the Palace to do that tour and then take transit downtown and do a walking tour.

Vienna was wonderful, I wish I had more time to explore it in more detail. The Renaissance may, or may not, be my choice for next time around.

The hotel services were good as long as the facilities. The security though was not so tight even in the interiors (Breakfast lounge). People from outside the hotel came in and without any check, they stole many handbags from hotel residents that they were having their breakfast. So if you are visiting this hotel, be extra careful. If any mis-ups happens, the hotel management will have no responsibilities taken on this. Practically, they will not even bother to have an investigation if you will not persist on it.

The U Bahn is so close and efficient that the location of the hotel could be considered as being central. The room and the hotel itself were quiet and spotless, our room was large, the bed was comfortable and the staff were welcoming and helpful. The free great quality morning coffee in the relaxing lobby easilly compensated for the lack of in-room coffee maker. Hotel food prices were high, but there are alternative eating choices within walking distance. For our overnight stay this was the perfect hotel and the only regret was that we did not book additional nights to experience more of Vienna.

- Room design needs remodeling.
- Room size- Reasonable.
- Pricey internet rate.
- exagerated breakfast price (22 EUR/PER)
- Good bar services
- Nothing nearby (no restaurants, no shops, no bars)
- No smoking floor!!!
- A very small gym, a small pool- no panoramic view (vs. the ads).

We were two families and kids , taking 4 (connected) rooms for 4 nights in the hotel last week, 99 Euro for B&B.
The hotel is great !
Subway is less than 50 meters from hotel and it takes you in no-time into the center.
Additional 100 meters from the subway (note, it is opposite to the hotel direction) you will find yourself in a very long pedestrian street (1 KM) with all restaurants and fast food you want to have (as well as C&A and H&M… everything but without tourists).
The swimming pool is very clean and it is very big for city hotels - great for kids after long day in the city.
Breakfast is great with good variety.
I stayed in many hotels in “classical Europe” trust me the hotel doesn’t deserved the low score in the Tripadvisor – it is wonderful.

Well, the Renaissance is a nice hotel for business travelers and groups. Location is not great : not very far from city center (just 5 subway station, maybe 10 mn) but nothing around it to eat.

Room is ok for such kind of hotel, not very large but enough for a short stay. Wifi doesn't work well.

Breakfast is also nice, .. but nothing special !

We've booked it though Priceline but the Hotel has very good breakfast inclusive rate.

We have stayed in this hotel twice now as part of bus tours and have been thoroughly impressed both times. Our room was large and located looking over a central courtyard which was quiet and you could open the window and get some fresh air. Bathroom was large and comfortable to use.
Breakfasts were wonderful, with a huge range of fruits, cheeses, cereals, and then a cooked breakfast as well.
It is a little out of the city but their is a very convenient underground station over the road and it is only 5 stops or 7 mins to Karlzplatz and then a 5 minute walk into the centre of Vienna. It also has restaurants nearby and good cheap internet access and laundry, so everything you could want.
We were able to get a late check out of 2pm for nothing extra which was very good with an 11.30pm flight.
Would highly recommend it.
