I asked my travel agents to find me a hotel in Vienna - near the city centre, not too expensive, and close to a place where I could go ice-skating. As usual, they came up trumps.

LOCATION
Hotel Stadthalle is close to the Stadthalle, which is a huge complex that includes an indoor skating rink and an Olympic-sized (i.e. 50 m long) swimming pool. Sheer heaven.

It is also close to the Westbahnhof. This means you can catch the bus that travels to and from the airport every half an hour in winter (every 20 minutes in the summer) for just EUR 6 for one way. The journey takes 35 minutes.

The Westbahnhof is also a junction point for trains, the underground trains, trams and buses. Very convenient.

The hotel and station are also close to Mariahilferstrasse - one of the main shopping streets there - with lots of bookshops including a British bookshop and an English-speaking cinema (Cinema Haydn - [--]).

At the end of Mariahilferstrasse, there are the main museums, the opera house, the beautiful Ring Street including the Town Hall and parliament building and the old central part of town.

HOTEL
The hotel itself was clean. The staff was young and friendly, pleasant, polite and helpful. The breakfast buffet was plentiful - nothing cooked, however. Very quiet - no piped music. Free Internet access in the lobby for the guests. No lifts because the hotel is in an old town house.

There were some nice little touches over Christmas and New Year. One cute feature was that the hotel has a lavender garden on a flat roof. This can only be viewed from the second and third floors, however. I came back home with a quite different souvenir from the norm - a jar containing 30 g of lavender harvested from the hotel's own garden.

We stayed at this hotel when attending a wedding in Vienna. The main reasons for booking were the reasonable price and the location. There were some 12 of us staying here and everyone was very pleased with it.

The hotel is only 5 min walk from the Westbahnhof railway station, which has excellent connections to both the city centre (15 min by U-bahn) and to the airport (30 min). The area itself is pretty quiet and less touristy than the town centre, but there are still a plenty of restaurants and bars nearby.

The reception area is very light and spacey and the same applies to the breakfast room. There is a lovely patio garden where you can have breakfast and sit outside. The staff at the reception were very helpful and friendly. The room décor was a bit outdated and basic, but it didn’t bother us, as we were not spending much time there anyway.

A great choice with a good price and value, however if you are after luxury and boutique chic you will be better off somewhere else.

staying in this small boutique hotel was a real treat. we enjoyed the familiar, relaxed atmosphere and breakfast in the phantastic,
quiet garden.a 5 minutes walk took us to the underground and within 10 minutes we were in the beautiful centre of Vienna.
So go and see it for yourself!

I spent 2 nights in this hotel and loved it. Very nice and competent staff. Cosy room, hotel-central location, good infrastructure(trains,
underground). Will definitely come back. Bruce Waine

This hotel offers excellent value for money. Vienna is not a cheap place to stay, but this hotel was a great find! It's only a 5 min walk from Westbahnhof train station. It's 7 mins by underground from there to Stephansplatz (for the main city centre and sights), and a 10 min tram ride(no.58) to Schloss Shoenbrunn. There is a half hourly bus service to the airport (6 euros one-way) taking 35mins.
I had a single room, which was very clean and cosy. It was a little small (the bathroom was behind a sliding door) but they had designed the room to make best use of the space and I was really happy with it. Comfortable bed and excellent service from reception. There is free internet access and a lovely little courtyard area. I can't comment on the breakfast as I didn't have it.
Don't be put off by the hotel exterior (a little dull and grey) or the road it's situated on. There is a small supermarket opposite which was very handy! I would definitely stay here again :)
