“Great staff, great location, but looking a little tired”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 September 2013

We stayed here after reading the reviews on here and liked it. I think some of the photographs are different to how the hotel is now (e.g. reception and gardens), but generally the same. It's well located, with only 3-5 stops between most of the main tourist attractions, which makes it an ideal base for seeing Vienna. On arrival the manager was extremely helpful in planning our short stay, which we really appreciated. We didn't realise until we were leaving that the wine cellar (which in fairness we had forgotten was one of the photos that made us book the hotel) had to be booked - so this is something that we would do on a second visit.

The rooms were spacious and the decor was nice, but needing update or repair (e.g. lamp shade falling apart, one curtain missing), a fridge and kettle would be nice too. We arrived late (with about 20-30 mins left) for breakfast some days, but whilst there were plenty of drink choices there was little hot food left by this time. The food that was there was nice and again the staff were very attentive.

I wanted to stay somewhere with some Viennese character and this hotel was perfect. We were amazed by the size of our room - actually a suite with a huge bedroom and separate living room, entrance foyer, bathroom and toilet. Beautifully appointed with solid timber furniture, marble bathroom and all in beautiful condition and immaculately clean. The breakfast room was charming and breakfast was typical European with a selection of fruit, yoghurt, cereal, cold meats and cheese and bakery. You could even start the day with a glass of champagne! There is free WiFi in the lobby and it also worked for us in our room. The host Banos was friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. We were able to leave our bags for a few hours until we had to catch the train. The location is perfect for public transport and just a short walk to a major shopping strip with good restaurants. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to others for a great Vienna experience.

Room Tip: There are no tea making facilities or refrigerator in the room but you can ask for tea to be served...

There are many nice things to say about this hotel, and our visit was, overall, quite nice. It is less than one mile (and one km) from the train station. We had a significant amount of luggage, so took a taxi from the train station. The driver did not know where Herklotzgasse was located and drove around a long time and charged us an exorbitant amount. It would have been easy to have taken the underground. At least know to say that H.gasse is right off the Gumberdorferstrasse U station. (By the way, some reviewers said that the hotel offers a shuttle service to the airport. It does not, but has an arrangement with a taxi service that charges a flat 33 euro for the trip and the taxi is very prompt arriving 10 minutes before you ask and is very prompt.)

We had a room on Floor One that faced on two streets. There is no a/c as noted, so we had the windows open. We heard cars, voices, dogs, sirens, etc. all night. We didn't mind it, as we sort of liked the "urban sounds," but if you need quiet to sleep, be sure to ask for a room facing the courtyard and not the street. I don't know the room layouts, as other reviewers had many different types of rooms. We had a two room suite, with two huge rooms--one with the bed and a wardrobe and the other with a couch, 2 chairs, kitchen type table and chairs. The bed is comfortable to sleep on with the traditional two duvets for covers. The furniture is quite old and some pretty beat up (the rooms are very dark), but we enjoyed having the two rooms. The toilet was in a small room right off the entry to the rooms and a second small room had the toilet and shower (good water pressure and plenty of hot water).

We got around on the underground and appreciated being close to a station. However, beware that the area around is a bit "seedy." At night, there were drunks asleep on the benches outside of the station. The station does not look like the stations closer to the tourist areas. It is quite dirty in areas, and there are drunks asleep outside on benches at night. It is busy there, and we felt safe as a couple, but I would not have as a single woman. The neighborhood seems to be quite ethnic with many interesting little walk in eateries for food. There are better areas to go to cafes, etc.

The hotel serves a nice breakfast of cereals, breads, meats, cheeses, and hard cooked eggs and juice. It does not have a full warm complement but we certainly never needed it.

We purchased the Vienna Cards from the desk clerk when we arrived. A wise move! The cards were 19,7 euro each and billed to our room. They gave us transportation and many discounts for 72 hours.

We did not rank this hotel higher due to the neighborhood issues of coming off the subway at night, the noise in our room, the fact that the rooms were not really furnished that nicely, there were few amenities, and while the lobby and courtyard was lovely, no one gathered there and it was not a place to go for conversations with people. (In fact, while the hotel seemed to have quite a few guests at breakfast, we never spoke with any of them. We were the only guests speaking in English at breakfast, and we would have enjoyed meeting people from other countries.)

We would not hesitate to stay there again, but we would prefer to try another location first.

We stayed here based on previous reviews of this hotel. Without a doubt, I would stay here again-that's why I gave it five stars. The hotel is a two minute walk to the Gumperdorferstrasse train station. In just a few stops, you're at the heart of Vienna. We stayed in June, but it was cool and rainy so we didn't need the a/c. The concierge was so helpful, he gave us great recommendations for restaurants in the neighborhoods surrounding Vienna's city center. I thought the room was rather large for European style hotel room-the two of us and our large suitcases fit quite comfortably. There is WiFi for free, which we occasionally used. The bed was comfortable and it was very quiet. The free breakfast was good. For the price we paid, I truly have no complaints. While it's not in the city center, the metro station is so close that it's worth the walk.

Location is excellent: near a subway station, 10 min by walking to Mariahilfer Straße, friendly staff, very good breakfast, but no air conditioning and no refrigerators (not recommended to come here during hot summers). But otherwise, an old style hotel with a special charm.

Room Tip: deluxe rooms are much bigger

Near to metro and central street. There are many markets and cafes around hotel. Hotel rooms are very clean and comfortable, but there is no AC. WiFi connection is free. Breakfast is good, especially sausages :) You can also save your money and documents in security box, it is free of charge

Room Tip: Select rooms with private bathroom/toilet

We booked this hotel for a short break while visiting family in the UK. We chose it for the local character and not being part of a global chain. We were not disappointed! Of course we had to choose a time when a heat wave had hit Vienna so the lack of aircon had us sweating for the duration of our stay but the lovely garden area where you could take your breakfast or just enjoy a good coffee more than made up for the discomfort at night.
Our host was extremely helpful with recommendations of local eateries and also with the very efficient U- Bahn which was only 50 metres away from the hotel and with few changes took us to the hectic centre of Vienna ( being the height of the tourist season).
We loved it. Thanks Panus!

Room Tip: Our room faced west so when we returned from our outings in the late afternoon our room was like an...
