“Old style hotel close to city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

This is an old style hotel in a good location close to the city centre. Walking distance to the main street shops. The room looks like something out of the bourne movies. They are spacious and very clean. The staff ok helpful enough. The breakfast is nothing special, but it there is variety for choice.

This is an older hotel and we booked an apartment which is in another building but connected to the hotel by a covered walkway. The room was clean, with a tiny kitchen. The staff were most helpful with any query I had AND they have a lift which is not common in older European hotels! If you are lucky you can get parking on the street just outside the hotel. On Sat and Sun it's free to park on the street so we just left our car there and walked the few blocks into the city. On Monday we bought a 8Euro voucher from the hotel to cover parking for the next 24 hours till we left. I would recommend this place without hesitation.

Be very careful if you book the apartments here, as there is another place called the Carlton Suites, which look much better on the internet than these apartments. The description says that many apartments have a dishwasher, and most photos show an oven and nice furniture. Ours had no oven no dishwasher, no microwave, no toaster, nothing like washing up liquid, and no draining board. We had already read some reviews after booking, and took our own plastic chopping board, peeler, serated knife, tea, coffee and sugar. Unlike any other apartment we have.ever stayed in, there was nothing for us at all. No welcome tea bags, or anything. Not even a bottle of water. The toilet seat was completely broken in the toilet, although they did get it repaired after 2 complaints. The beds were like boards, very flat pillows, so we put towels under them to make them useable. Wardrobes rammed up to the bed, so no bedside cabinets, and nothing to put a cup of coffee on. Frayed blackout blinds, printed red carpet, with old blue printed curtains. Very thin duvets - wouldn't like to be there in the winter. Staff were very pleasant and helpful, and breakfast was adequate, although again, the room used for breakfast was stark and plain. To say that the hotel has a garden, is a joke. it's a coutyard with a few pots. While we were there, lumps fell off of the building, and the fire department erected a wood barrier and a cover over the entrance in case more fell off.
Reminded me of the old Communist country hotels before liberation. The only thing going for it was that it was all very clean.

Room Tip: Go to another apartment!

We wanted to be near the Third Man Museum and to be in a spacious apartment that we could share with another couple, this was perfect! We were on the sixth floor so we also had a pleasant view. We were close to a wonderful market filled with an assortment of foods and spices that was super fun to walk through. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen area was large , and the toilet area is separate from the bath area so that is helpful for sharing the apartment with another couple. We had to leave early in the morning so we were not able to enjoy the breakfast.

Room Tip: We had a room on the sixth floor so we had a nice view.

Carlton Opera is a old property which can be a good experience provided its well maintained. This one not particularly so.

At checkin we were shown the Standard double room that we booked (#401) and offered Room #402, for an extra Euro 10/day. We took the offer as #402 is much better. Nothing wrong with the room in specific but overall the feeling in there is a bit dull. The orginal room was small and depressing.

The hotel has aircon. We kept it ON while leaving the room on the 3rd day and it was the only day the room felt comfr

Reception staff is not arrogant. They do understand English but would rate very low on the friendliness meter. Essential trait i would think for front office.

Breakfast is ok on quality but the arrangement split across 2 rooms is not particularly appealing.

Hotel is very close to the Naschmarkt (we didnt like it much) and a 8min walk from the Karlspatz Underground station. Being centrally located most tours will pick you up from here.

You can book tours of viennasightseeing.at throught the hotel website. But be careful as no one seems to access the backend and i only got a confirmation of my tour booking only once i wrote an email to them after not getting any response for 5 days.

The Wifi here is very patch and you can connect only 1 device/room. For something important, better to use the desktop near the front desk.

As we had an early morning flight out of Vienna we booked a taxi through the hotel and they charged Euro 38.

Very nice hotel! We stayed there for a week in winter. The rooms are comfortable, everything you need was included. Location- close to 2 underground stations, not so far from the center. Plus- breakfast is included!

Comfortable, not deluxe, and we didn't get the apartment with kitchenette that we were promised, but we did have a top floor suite with a great view. The wrought iron "cage" elevator worked well, the rooms were clean, and the TV carried CNN in English, so the little bit of time we spent in the rooms was pleasant. The beds had good reading lights, although the wireless signal fluctuated depending on where you were in the suite. The breakfast here was truly outstanding, by the way, especially the coffee machine, and the desk people were very knowledgeable about trams, schedules, directions, etc. It's a couple of blocks from the Naschmarket, the subway, and a couple more blocks to the Ring so we were able to walk everywhere.

Room Tip: If you want a kitchenette, be sure to re-confirm!!!!
