We had booked the Hotel Donauwalzer through the internet and then were told by them the accommodation was a different price. That should have been warning enough for me to completely cancel the reservation. When we arrived, we were disappointed to find this "middle class hotel" to be located in a very undesirable area of Vienna and to be what we would describe in North America as a "dump", to put it mildly. The room had been described to me as a family room with standard furniture and we were shocked to find it as no more than an attic space with cramped quarters and highly suspiciously uncomfortable looking beds. The bathroom was the smallest I had ever seen. To get to the room, we walked past empty rooms with doors open and the unmade bed mattresses were stained and dirty. The hotel itself was shabby, dingy and very dirty looking, which was highly unusual in Austria as we found even the public toilets everwhere else to be spotless. The lobby is reached through a dark, dingy restaurant and one had to walk past the largest, smelliest dog I had ever seen. Due to the original mix up over internet reservations, I had not actually reserved the room with a credit card and therefore it was with great relief that we were able to cancel our accommodation at this hotel. Whoever described this hotel as "middle class" must have a very poor sense of humour or has no idea what lower, middle and upper class mean. I should have known when I could not find any reviews of this hotel that there was something amiss. Do not book hotels without seeing a review. The cost of this hotel was no different than much nicer ones elsewhere and in fact we ended up getting a very nice hotel closer to the city centre at virtually the same cost.
