We just returned from a two week trip to Prague, Budapest and Vienna. We stayed four nights at the K+K Maria Theresia in Vienna, and I must say overall it was a very positive experience. This was our first experience with the K+K chain of hotels and they seem very well managed.
As others have commented the location is ideal. We took the train from Budapest to Vienna Westbahnhof Station. There we bought Vienna Cards from the Austrian Railways (OBB) office in the station for 18.50 Euro (versus 24-hour U-bahn ticket 5.70 Euro; 72-hour U-bahn ticket 13.60 Euro; Single ride U-bahn tickets 1.70 Euro). You can take U3 (Orange Line) in direction Simmering a few stops to the Volkstheater station, exit the station onto Burggasse, walk maybe 100 yards along Burggasse, turn left onto Kirchberggasse to the K+K Hotel (five minute walk). It could not be easier. The trip outbound by U-bahn and commuter train to the airport was equally easy and cheap.
We had one of their “Executive” king bedded rooms (two twins together to make a king). It was quite adequate size as was the bathroom (more space than the K+K denoted “Classic” room in Prague). It was immaculate and quite functional (heated bathroom floors!). Beds were very firm – almost too much so. We took advantage of a direct K+K online “Early Booker Rate.” Our room appeared quite new and faced a quiet courtyard. The 4th floor rooms with a city view face east and overlook a fairly busy street (with a frequent tram). Plus the window opened wide for fresh air. Our room was non-smoking, but several times the hallway smelled strongly of smoke, and one night I was awakened at 3 AM by the very strong smell of cigarettes – wafting in our room from the courtyard. But overall for an ardent non-smoker the property was quite accommodating.
The breakfast was simply great. The brekfast room is a separate, all non-smoking room right off the lobby bar area. Everything was fresh and constantly restocked. The front desk and breakfast service staff were very friendly and quite helpful. Free internet access just off the lobby.
The location is ideal – with the Vienna Card, we hopped on and off a tram, bus or the U-bahn and went everywhere. You can get to the center of the old city in 5 minutes by U-bahn but be away from all the commotion and loads of tourists in and around Stephansplatz. There is a Billa market about four blocks from the hotel on a very nice commercial street.
Vienna is really a beautiful city – full of charm and history and none of the pretention of Paris. The Fine Arts Museum is open late (9 PM) on Thursdays and is simply gorgeous in the evening. It is a short walk from the K+K.
