“Ddecent but not deluxe”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

This was an OK place, but not on the 4-star level. It's the little things that make a difference. The rooms are small, but that's a given for most places in Europe. Instead of making an iron in the room or that could be borrowed, they simply said "go to the ironing room on the ground floor". That may be more efficient, but it's not super hospitable. I would skip breakfast. At 15 euro, it's not worth it. There are cafes and grocery stores nearby. It's a great location, close to the Hofburg, the Museum Quarter and the Opera, as well as teh metro and tram.

Room Tip: Privilege rooms on the 4th & 5th floors have very little headroom due to slanted ceilings

Dear user OddNick,

thank you very much for commenting on your stay at the Mercure Josefshof.

it were sorry to read that not getting an iron to your room dissatisfied your stay.
Unfortunately due to the austrian law and fire regulations we are not allowed to provide irons in guest rooms. That is why we set a special ironing room as an extra service for our guests.

The breakfast price might sound expensive on the first look. But not only is it the common price in Vienna, we also offer a large variety you can choose from and you can have breakfast until 12:00h.

We would be very happy to welcome you once again in the future and remain with
best regards from Vienna

This hotel is really a three-star rather than a four-star, and if it would just admit it, I wouldn't be irritated. As other reviewers have noted, its location is its principal attraction; it is within virtual walking distance of everything a tourist would want to see, and very close to the Rathaus underground station which will through Karlsplatz connects with all the other lines of the city.
The rooms are small and well maintained, and the neighborhood is quiet. However, and this is a big however, the doors to my shower (one of these circular, space-age things) did not close properly...they kept falling off the track, forcing water into the bathroom. I spoke immediately to the staff about this. Result? As I was checking out three mornings later someone came to repair the shower. The breakfast buffet is typical of these kinds of hotels in Germany and Austria, perhaps a bit pricy for what it is. Given that there are so many excellent cafes in the neighborhood that there is no need to opt for it. I doubt I would stay here again. There must be other and better options in a city like Vienna, which lives on tourism.

I stayed at this hotel for 2 days. It should be rated 2 1/2 to 3 star. It definitely should NOT rated as a 4 star hotel. The front desk clerk by the name of James should not be dealing with the public. He needs to stay in the back room. The internet is very slow and there is a limit of the amount of downloads. Breakfast is 16 euros is not worth the price.

Room Tip: Unless you need to be close to the Rathaus, there are so many better choices than this hotel.

Dear user WillG5841,

thank you for your short comment on your stay.

Unfortunately there is no staff member with the name "James" so it is quite hard for us to talk to him to know what has happened.
We would have loved a more detailed description about the reasons ranking us that bad.

Nevertheless we wish you all the best and send best wishes to Vegas.

The hotel is well located to major attractions such as Museums Quarter. Closest station is Line 2 Rathaus (under 5mins) and secondly Line 3 Volkstheater(5-8mins). Its classed as a 4 star but 3-3.5max. As said the location is a seller for the not bad prices. The reception is tiny and can be very crowed at times. Previous posts have said internet is patchy. I was on 1st floor (ie NOT far from reception) so its so so for viewing web pages but impossible to stream and hard to upload or download photos and DID cut out about every 10 minutes which is not Interenet service I expect. We booked a superior room and its pleasantly large but drab & boring. The common areas are small and pokey. The bed is very comfortable and I like individual duvets. The hotel is in a side street so even with the window open its not noisy. Very suprised NO tea/coffee and kettle but several cafes (with typical slow service nearby) . TV is tiny and only english channel is CNN !!! The bathroom is large , clean and with nice details. Big cupboard and a safe but the room above footsteps can be heard easily .
As a silver mercure member I have always received 2 complimentary drinks when staying ( and have stayed at 5 in the last month in Europe BUT here I was given only 1 as my wife was not a silver Accor member. I questioned this at the reception and got a sarcastic comment to that fact! Lift your game guys. I would NOT stay in this Mercure again. I stayed last time @ Novotel Messe which is a bit out of the center is better value and only 10mins into town.

we were upgraded , as an accor member and room was great . great fittings and shower. Public areas a bit bland . didn't eat there as great local place for breakfast.

100 metres from excellent underground for east access to all sights . car parking is under building so easy but quite expensive. I'd go back

My experience with this hotel was not good. Thankfully me and my girlfriend was staying for just one night. First we arrived and there was a label on the door saying "I'm not here, please call the following number...". I rang the bell near the door and somebody opened from the inside. The receptionist was helpful enough and soon we were on the way to our room. However, the indoor parking was 100% full, so I had to leave my car on the street and had to get up at 8:00 to purchase parking permits, which are not sold at the reception, but at a near shop close to the hotel.
The elevators are not clearly marked which one goes to which rooms. After finding the room, we discovered that the furniture is old, especially the wardrobe and desk.
The bathroom was large, new and clean enough, no remarks there.
The free wi-fi was irrelevant, because our both iphones couldn't get more than one bar of signal, so couldn't even login.

Room Tip: My only tip would be "don't stay here until they do a renovation".

Dear guest,

thank you for your review about your stay with us.

We are sorry for the faced parking problem.
Unfortunately in the Vienna-citycenter it is not that easy to offer enough parking spaces for everybody.
Due to the many buildings in the surrounding we have only a limited number of garage spaces. At least during the weekends it is free to park outside in the streets.

During your stay we had a problem with our WIFI signal. After several updates this is solved now.

We would be happy if you would give us the chance to convince you about our quality during a future stay - for example in a top modern refurbished privilege room.

Best regards and wishes in the meantime
