We stayed in the Lerner for 6 nights over new year and I would highly recommend it. Very friendly staff who made us feel welcome and who went out of their way to ensure that our stay with them was enjoyable. Little touches like a new years gift pack and making us a meal when we arrived out of hours really set this place apart from the average hotel. Excellent location - so central you can get anywhere in the Inner Stadt in less than a ten minute walk. Breakfasts were delicious and the fact that such nice rooms and quality service come at such a reasonable price is the icing on the cake.

We stayed at Pension Lerner for three nights in September 2010. It was the third city on a train journey through central Europe, when we also visited Berlin, Prague and Budapest.

Pension Lerner’s best attribute is its location. We arrived in Vienna by train into Wien Miedling station, used the efficient Vienna underground, changing at Westbanhof for Herrengasse, thereafter a ten minute walk. The hotel is easy to find: the main entrance is on Wipplingerstrasse, adjacent to the viaduct over Tiefergraben. The building is mostly occupied by offices, and the elevator worked well throughout. Through the basement you can exit the building onto Tiefergraben.

The furniture and fittings in our room were tired and drab, but it was clean and bright. Some of the bathroom tiling and fittings were carelessly done and unfinished. The room overlooked the busy Wipplingerstrasse, but traffic noise was not intrusive. I was grateful to be allowed time on their office computer to master the idiosyncrasies of the Wizz Air internet site and print tickets for our flight home.

We spent one night in our allocated room, but were unhappy there. The room had a very odd arrangement. There were three parts: the main living / sleeping area, a separate room containing a WC, and a third room with a shower and washbasin. Neither of the two smaller rooms had windows.

The toilet was of the kind that allowed inspection of the fruits of ones communication with nature before flushing. The extractor fan was inadequate in dispelling the resultant aroma; by the time we woke in the morning the smell was still evident. We noticed that the next room was free and had a normal bedroom / ensuite setup, and insisted that we move. This was done with reasonable grace within 45 minutes, but it was an unsettling experience.

Breakfast was also problematic. On our first morning, only one member of staff was present. She prepared rooms, handled arrivals and departures, and everything needed in the hotel. Hence, although the breakfast was fine, there was no-one to look after the guests. We ended up going into the kitchen and fending for ourselves. We voiced our dissatisfaction with this, with the result that the breakfast service was much improved the following two days.

We left disappointed, and with the overall impression that the hotel was attempting to maximise its profit at the expense of its guests and its staff. We paid €92 a night, which is not cheap, even for pricey Vienna; and we felt we had obtained poor value for money.

Great pension. Very quiet, large room with basic but adequate furnishings. The location is terrific - close to all you want to see in the District 1 but enough away so you dont have enormous amount of street noise. Excellent speed of internet connection. Breakfast fine - not lavish but more than adequate.
Only "complaint" - and it is a standard one - when travelling in Europe in summer you dont need mountains of bedding - oh for a simple sheet and blanket for warm nights in unairconditioned rooms.
Small complaint overall

We had a lovely stay at Pension Lerner, very convenient in the heart of Vienna. Beautiful white linen, and lovely breakfast, very helpful and friendly people. The only difficulty we had was the lack of signage on the street. The Airport bus stopped very close, and the directions we were given were very clear until we reached the street, then the trouble started. We dragged out suitcases for miles as people misdirected us. We finally ended up where we started, and on walking half-way down the road a sign appeared. Travellers if you think you're in the right place, you are!

This was my first time staying in a pension. Lerner is a 7 room pension located very close to city center and within walking distance to bars, restaurants, and most attractions. My room was a twin. It was clean, comfortable, and had free WIFI internet. I thought the staff was friendly and helpful. Typical European breakfast of bread and jam was included with the room. There was only one other room occupied while I was there, so the hotel was very quiet.

The most unprofessional pension ever. We had booked a room, they had our credit card number and when we got there they told us that they had no room!!!!!

So, we spend our first day in Vienna full of anxiety!!!

I hope that nobody will ever fell the way we felt during our vacations. That incident destroyed our happiness and our holidays.
