Owner description: The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.

I have booked a ticket for both upper (the main beautiful building) and the lower building which is the building 10’ walking distance after the huge gardens. The upper building includes various paintings but few. Not that interesting in my opinion. The lower building (opposite the upper) has no interest at all. Just a few more paintings. It was a waste of time, plus you have to walk all that way which is very unpleasant in 33 degrees in summer (like we did!).
Only taking photos of the really beautiful main building outside and the huge garden is enough. Paying 20€ to see the inside of both buildings is just a waste of time and money (in my opinion), especially the lower building!

If you’re into Klimt then this is a “no miss” destination. There are also isolated examples of Monet, Manet, Cecaine, etc., but not much for them (not enough to warrant the time). Museum is well maintained - and very busy (expect crowds). Much of the artwork itself does not seem to have been restored - which appeals to some folks.
Avoid midday if you can, the crowds (especially from tours) gets oppressive.

The Belvedere was by far my favorite thing I visited in Vienna. It houses a large collection of Klimt paintings (including The Kiss!!), some of which are located in the lower Belvedere museum. The collection is very diverse, and is great for history and art buffs alike. Do yourself a favor, and pay the extra money for the lower half! Most people do not because many of the more famous paintings are houses in the upper, but the works in the Lower rival anything you'll experience in the upper. Also make sure you take a stroll through the gardens, they're quite nice and great for some post-art reflection. A must see while you're in Vienna!

Famous Klimt’s there. Garden lovely. Lots of early religious art, some modern as well. Elevators! Not sure what else to say. We’re glad we went.
