Owner description: The Neue Burg is the most recent part of the Hofburg Palace on Vienna’s Ringstrasse, and it is home to three collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. The Collection of Historic Musical Instruments comprises the original instruments of some of the world’s greatest composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The Collection of Arms and Armour is packed full of magnificent suits of armour and decora-tive weapons that attest to chivalric values and impor-tant occasions at court. And at the Ephesus Museum the »Parthian Monument« reflects the glory and splendour of one of Antiquity’s greatest cities.

There are three museums in Neue Burg. The musical instruments and the arms and armour are very interesting interms of the scope of the collections. We enjoyed the Epheseus Museum most of all. The collection and presentation is excellent about this important Roman site in modern day Turkey. Tip - buy the combo ticket for all three museums.

The musical instruments section is very interesting (it IS Viena, after all), but the armors and weapons are hands down awesome. Comparing it to the Invalides Museum in France is unfair since it's considerably smaller, but they have an extensive 16th century collection that is not kept behind glass viewing panes, therefore making for awesome pictures and allowing great detail observation.
Worth the 3 museum combo ticket.

The Arms and Armor collection is one of the most impressive in the world. All types of melee weapons and armor, shields, full suits of armor, swords, early firearms, helmets, maces, hammers, halberds, spears, lances, you name it, it's here. Very quiet and few visitors, but well worth the paltry fee to view. Not English friendly with all descriptions in German, but still a must see.

We stopped here to see the musical instruments; very impressive! While some of descriptions have sections in English most are German only. Included in the admission price (9 Euro) is an audio device with English narration and snippets of music from some of the instruments. There are examples, through the ages, of every string and wind instrument known to man, keyboards, reeded, strings, horns and more. This is a "must see" for any musician or student of instruments. On the same ticket are admission to the Collection of Arms and Armour and the Ephesus Museum.

A very rich and large collection of armor and weapons, including guns. Under-visited even though it is an ideal place to bring the boys in the family. This site gives you a sense of the armor: http://www.pbase.com/bmcmorrow/hofburgarmory&page=1
