“Nice hostel”
Reviewed 16 August 2011

We found this place to be really nice considering that it is a budget accommodation. The room was rather small, but clean. Staff was extra friendly and very helpful. Nice lounge area, computer room, lockers, free bag storage and breakfast available for a reasonable fee. The location is quite convenient, not so far from the centre of Vienna. Metro station is near by.
The only thing we didn't like is that even that we stayed there for 3 nights, the room was never cleaned. The hostel has two buildings; Wi-Fi doesn't work if you aren't staying in the main building.

What I liked: The great bedrooms which are nearly like real hotel ones. The cleanlness, and the confort. The kitchen and the gardens are great, such as the music instruments which you can play.

What I disliked: The breakfast far too small for 3 euros, the lack of internet access: contrary to what is mentioned on various booking websites, you need your own laptop to connect to wifi. There are also not enough showers (1 for 10 persons), and even if you wake up early, you may have to wait for quite a while before enjoying them

Convenient location - close to Westbahnhof station.
Quite clean rooms, but the area can be noisy at nights - well, it is a hostel, so what do you expect :)
Free wi-fi is avaiable in the lobby.

Ruthensteiner is a great base to explore Vienna from. We were here a couple of years back and loved its laid back atmosphere, clean, comfortable rooms and its placement within the city.

This time round we were recommended one of their Garden Apartments instead of a normal double room - this turned out to be a huge, very well presented apartment across the road from the main hostel. The staff were as friendly, approachable and knowledgeable as ever and the area around the hostel has a lot of shops, cafes and bars. The bar in the hostel is a lively, friendly place for meeting fellow travellers. Maybe most importantly, you're a few minutes walk from Westbanhof and a short U-Bahn ride away from the cathedral and the city at Stephansplatz, the market at Karlsplatz and pretty much anything else you might want to see or do in the city.

A banging, pub-crawl hostel it ain't (but Wombat's is just around the corner if that's your bag); a quiet, clean and welcoming base for city exploration it is.

We'll be back, Ruthensteiner!

A great hostel with very helpful staff, nice garden areas, lockers so all of your things are secure, and a reasonable location. But room is so small.

The staff is very helpful, provides all sorts of info about the city, speaks fluent English and are very friendly. There are city maps, flyers for all sorts of concerts and tours and programs, and even a book exchange shelf, where you can leave your book and take a new one. There is also a music room where guests are welcome to play some instruments (piano, guitar, african drums etc). A bar has a perfect nightlife of its own, if you don't feel like going out - you can still party there and meet lots of other travellers just like you - from all over the world.
Rooms are clean and cosy, dorms have safety lockers for every person, an inner garden has giant chess set and also offers a grilling possibility.
We really liked everything about our stay at Ruthensteiner.

We stayed in one of their apartments for 5 days. The place is excellent, clean and staff are helpful. Location is superbly located next to the train station for easy access to the major areas of interest.
