Large clean quiet rooms with easy access to U-bahn and great staff.

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 May 2014
My wife and I stayed here May 17-21. Access from the Vienna train stations and all tourist attractions easy via the excellent U-bahn, tram & bus system.

Rooms are large, clean and quiet. Breakfast was excellent with an attentive and "can-do" attitude by all staff from maid to manager. Laundry facilities are available with good restaurants close by.

We loved Vienna and will return to this stellar facility when we do!

Finding a reasonable priced place to stay close to Vienna's city centre can be tricky.
This property is four stops on the U-Bahn from Karls Platz, so travelling into the heart of the old city is not a problem with the efficient mass transit system Vienna has. Pension Schonbrunn is a no frills establishment, but being located slightly away from the main hubbub makes it quieter.
You can buy a "Vienna Card", which includes public transport and discounted admissions from the ticket offices at stations or at the airport.
You are a stones throw away from the Schonbrunn Palace and gardens as well, so you can start your day with a peaceful stroll in the gardens before the full - on" tourist sensory assault" you will experience downtown. .
The rooms are kept very clean and the staff are friendly and helpful.
You can book room only, or B&B. Breakfast selection was not massive but was fine for what we wanted.
As a suggestion, take the U4 U-Bahn one stop further out and have the de-luxe breakfast at Dommayers Cafe, a famous old Vienese cafe located behind The Parkhotel Schonbrunn.
15 Euros a go, but worth every cent.
You'll have saved the money by staying at the Pension Schonbrunn,, compared to other places downtown.

We found this pension in Vienna while looking for decent lodgings, away from the big hotel chains and not driving us bankrupt.
The hotel is a small one with only 30 rooms situated very close to the Schönbrunn Castle. It is 5 minutes walking from the U-bahn #4 line which takes you in 20 minutes to the city center. For those coming with the car there is an underground parking.
The room was basic but very clean and quiet since was facing a small garden. We took the smaller one with the queen size bed in one corner.
The building itself is a very nice one, built in 1908 and having hosted also Joseph Stalin in 1913 (so says the sign on the outside wall).
The staff was very helpful and attentive to all our needs. They even printed our on-line check-in boarding passes.
The breakfast was the continental type with an excellent assortment of bread rolls. The staff inquired every time if we needed anything that was not on display (such as tea, other than the Nespresso coffee or eggs prepared in any form).
Given the small number of rooms each guest was treated in a personal way.
For those planning to visit Schönbrunn Castle it is a 10 mnt walking distance from the hotel.
Not to be forgotten - excellent Wifi coverage all over: in the room as well as in the dinning room.
The hotel is an excellent value for money and by all means this will be our choice for the next visit to Vienna.

Room tip: Ask for a room facing the garden (seems most are such). Attention - in the smaller rooms the double bed (queen size) is in one corner so that the person sleeping toward the wall might have some difficulties getting of the bed without disturbing the other person.

It was clean and comfortable.the location just down from castle and zoo was great! Walking distance.
The hotel is nothing great but clean and decent. The front desk spoke good English and very helpful pointing out good tourist spots. It was well worth the money. I highly recommend it for the price and location.

Clean room, helpful innkeeper, great breakfast at a reasonable price, free Wifi
Underground parking (reasonable fee) or parking on the street is free until 0800 (after 0800 purchase prepaid parking voucher from tobacco shop or front desk).
Schwabl Wirt restaurant, and also a WiennerWald restaurant (very good), one block away.

15 minute drive to the Opera downtown (Kärntnerringgarage parking garage ,Mahlerstrasse 6-8, is 2e/hr, max 6 or 20e, depending on the day. Drive past the expensive Kärntnerstrasse Tiefgarage, on the south side of the Opera, and take the next three right turns).

We stayed here for 5 nights and had no problems except for the size of the room and comfort of the bed. Staff is mostly very helpful and friendly, especially the morning crew. The breakfast was also reasonably priced - especially for Vienna - and plentiful and varied (though Americans might miss the scrambled eggs). However, there was a great assortment of breads and rolls and cheeses, plus dry cereal and yoghurt and some fresh fruits. Make your own coffee with four choices and there is tea if you prefer.

The location is good for access to the subway and an easy walk to the Schoenbrunn castle, with their own underground parking (at an additional charge), and nearby restaurants and food stores. There is also a Swarovsky store right across the street! Handy for last minute gifts.

The room we had was tiny - a long hallway with a small sitting area at the end, with one window (which opens!) and a clothes closet, chair and desk and small table. The TV did not get many channels (none in English) but we didn't go there to watch TV anyway. There is the usual WC - separate tiny room with just a toilet and a separate room for the sink and shower/tub. The bed was low and against the corner so that one of us had to crawl over the other to get out! Couldn't get out at the foot end since the edge of the desk was against the bed! The mattress was not comfortable either - too thin and lumpy.

The hotel is listed as non-smoking, but there is a small outdoor courtyard for smokers. That said, their smoke will seep into the rooms if you leave the window open. It had also seeped into our linens! My husband especially was annoyed by that and I had a cold so maybe was less sensitive to it.

All in all, we would both stay here again in future, just ask for a larger room, which I peeked into while walking down the hall. Though the hotel is on a busy street we had no problem with noise. The lift/elevator is tiny so you may need to ride up one at a time if you have lots of luggage!

Room tip: Rooms on the courtyard will have no traffic noise but if you open the window you will get smoke from the smoking area in the courtyard.
