“All-round good hotel”
Reviewed 30 January 2014

Great hotel with high-ceilinged, well-furnished rooms and a great buffet breakfast. It's located in what was once a working-class inner city district that has now been gentrified.

It's less than ten minutes' walk to the ring and the staff are very welcoming. There's also a good array of small bars and reasonably priced restaurants in the area, so, all in all, a winning combination of quality and location!

This hotel must have the nicest staff ever, by far its strongest point. The room itself was nice and large, and the price is very reasonable. Note however, that this is a different type of hotel, it's a "historic" hotel, so it has a different vibe and feel in comparison to most hotels.

Breakfast was nice and while they were working on the main breakfast hall, they offered free minibar for our stay, which is a nice touch. When we told the staff we had been robbed in Vienna, they offered a few well thought gifts to try and lift our spirits, I must say they made us feel a bit better about it.

We must admit that when the taxi stopped at the Altstadt we thought we were in the wrong part of town. Our concern very quickly evaporated and here are six reasons you should consider the Altstadt.
1) Wonderful ambiance created by the artwork and creative renovation.
2) Convenient location, an easy walk to restaurants and transport.
3) Our room was quiet, creatively designed, very comfortable and large by most standards.
4) The afternoon tea provided in the sitting room was of fantastic quality and a very nice touch.
5) The service from the Altstadt team was very professional, helpful and friendly.
6) The Altstadt is a little different and a refreshing change from corporate hotels.

Could not fault this hotel! Stayed for four nights at the beginning of December for the Christmas markets as a surprise for my mum's 50th birthday and could not have chosen a better place to stay.

It was just out of the main buzz of the city traffic to sleep peacefully but not too far away as walking to most of the markets was easy. There are a number of places to eat nearby- we took a 10 minute walk to 'Fromme Helene' which served absolutely delicious goulash as well as the best Apfelstrudel I had on the whole trip.
The hotel is also located very close to the U-bahn and the receptionists were extremely helpful in telling us how to use the train to Schonbrunn palace. Not only that but they were very patient in showing us how to get around the city as well as providing maps and ringing taxi's too.

The hotel itself was charming and beautifully decorated- the perfect balance between modern chic and old worldly charm. The rooms were spacious and the beds were very comfy
The bathroom was cleaned very well and the complimentary shampoo and body wash were very handy for the first night as we had misplaced ours!!

The service from all of the staff from the moment we arrived was brilliant- you are all very friendly and clearly all enjoy your jobs which makes the atmosphere in the hotel even better.

The breakfasts were definitely one of the most memorable things about our stay!!! The amount of choice and variety was outstanding, for sure the best breakfast I've ever had- you could not want for more of anything (pastries, different breads, cereals, dried fruit, yoghurt, fresh fruit, cold meats, cheeses) oh, and if you think that's everything... you are then asked how you would like your egg!!
Literally could keep you going until dinner time and even then you wouldn't need it as the complimentary cake and tea was a delightful touch to the perfect stay. The saloon bar/ chilling area was very peaceful in the evening to unwind by the fire (definitely needed after a long chilly day walking around the markets!)

Thank you so much Hotel Altstadt for making my mum's 50th birthday such a memorable one :)

A reasonable price for this level of luxury, friendly staff, beautiful design and artwork. Only slight drawback is distance from the city center but the underground station is but minutes away. We walked everywhere and it was no problem.

I stayed at the Altstadt between Christmas and New Years, and we had 2 rooms. This was not my first time at this hotel and it will definitely not be the last. The value for money is unbeatable, and what I like the most is the cozy and homey atmosphere at the hotel. Every staff member is extremely and genuinely friendly and kind, and they make you feel that everything is possible. 2 nights in a row we came for a drink at the Salon after closing hours, and both times, we were invited to enjoy a last drink. The location is great as I prefer not staying in the not too touristy areas. And it is only a nice 10-minute walk to the old town. Our room was small, but a perfect use of space, with a beautiful view of the church. The design was beautiful, with a lot of wood, and high quality materials and appliances. The breakfast buffet is also of highest quality, very rich, and has something for everyone. The friendly staff offers omelettes and other egg dishes upon request. Again, when we came after the official breakfast hours, no one would rush us or give us the feeling that we are not welcome anymore. For me, this is luxury for me, and it is the unique trademark of the Altstadt Vienna.

Room Tip: If you like a nice view, chose a room facing the church, but if you prefer very quiet, I would chose...

My wife and I checked into the hotel a short while ago. The hotel is in the midst of what appears to be major building work/renovations. I can hear the jack hammers as I type this from what appears to be the temporary restaurant of the hotel. I wish I had stayed elsewhere :( My rating is incomplete, as it is our first night, but I am a bit grumpy thus far!!

Dear Noordhoek TravelGuy!

We thank you very much for having chosen the Hotel Altstadt as your residence during your visit to Vienna.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience regarding the renovations due to a broken water pipe. A very unfortunate incidence which has occured 3 days ago in the breakfast Salons and now has put us in the situation of unexpected renovation work.

However, as the comfort in the rooms is not affected by the works we hope for your understanding of sporadically noise in the alternative provided common area. We have already made very good progress and the work shall be finished within the next 3 days.

We are truly very sorry that this happened during the time of your stay and that therefore your experience in our house is being influenced by this unfortunate matter.

Please allow me to remind you that all minibar items except Champagne is complimentary to all of our guests as a compensation during this time.

Last but not least we would like to thank you very much for mentioning this whilst staying with us and therefore giving us the chance to discuss this with you personally!

Thank you.
